Default Re: Winky Wright vs Kelly Pavlik (Both versions who fought Taylor)

Winky was a very stationary fighter at 160. I actually think Pavlik's style is all wrong for Winky because Winky stands in front of you with the high guard, which allows his opponents to let their hands go. Winky isn't Hopkins in that he can master the distance and control the pace of a fight with his feet. Winky traded a lot at 160 because he simply didn't have the legs like he used too in his prime to box and move.

I actually like Pavlik winning a close decision based on activity.

Pavlik would have his moments and try his best to break through Winky's defense, but I don't think he'd be able to consistently. Winky wins a UD with Pavlik having some early and maybe even mid round success.

Winky wasn't particularly mobile at 160 and he wasn't great off the backfoot either. He isn't likely to pressure the bigger, stronger man as well. I think he'd have a tough time getting in close enough to land his shots on Pavlik. A close fight where little is landing, but Pavlik's throwing considerably more and pressing forward, which likely gives him the decision in a close, maybe controversial bout.

Pavlik/Wright was never going to happen. Pav spent years calling Winky out, but Winky wanted nothing to do with him. That was the main reason fot the McKart fight.

The simple triagulation of common opponents rarely leads to sound fight analyis, but in the case of Pavlik/Wright we have two common opponents and seven fights we can look at. In every case, Pavlik out performed Wright. Winky had sound reasons for avoiding Kelly.

Pavlik has a good chance to win on volume. I don't think Winky would jab Pav's head off as much as he is taller than Trinidad and also not quite as dumb. Pav is longer, with a good jab himself.
