Very powerful left.
He neglected to use it though, usually just held it out to measure his right. He sometimes displayed a very powerful left hook and did real damage - and on rare occasions he actually landed a head-jolting jab. |

Oh, what Baer would have been if his head was screwed on straight and he had a great trainer. His over dependence on his right hand often masked his left. He couls put you to sleep with that left too.

Yeah, I'd mark his left a good seven, maybe even eight at best-speaking for pure brute strength, not consistency or technique. Just the same, carrying a 7-8 and a 10 into the ring with you. It shouldn't allowed.

Such a question deserves an appropriate answer, so please allow me...
Baer's power in his left hand was more refined and articulate but definitly less forceful than in his right. Possibly being raised as a crypto-Ashkenazi Jew, where you learn to read the Torah by scrolling through the Holy Book with your left forefinger from right to left (and against the left hands natural procepriation) explains the heightened development in his left hand coordination...but more likely Baer's early trainers just sought to suppliment his right hand power with a versatile left hand to disguise the boom whenever he lowered it. But while the hows and whys are hard to discern, it is obvious that where Baer had a concrete breaking right-hand blockbuster, his left hand multipunch flurry's- double jabs following with heartbeat-quick quadruple left hooks crowned with the "Baer bugle blaster" (his patented left uppercut) such as demonstrated in his Frankie Campbell bout...showed Baer to be much more than just a monstrous right hand puncher. I'd peg his left hand power at around 60-70% relative to his right hand power. |
