Clarence: Joe Louis was 75 years old when they fought.
Morris: I don't know how old he was, but he got his ass whooped.Clarence: Joe Louis had come out of retirement to fight Rocky Marciano the minute he was 76 years old. Joe Louis was always lying about his age. He lied about his age all the time. One time Frank Sinatra came in here and sat in this chair. I said Frank 'you hang out with Joe Louis, just between me and you, how old is Joe Louis?' You know what Frank told me, he said "Hey, Joe Louis is 137 years old." A hundred and thirty-seven years old!Sweets: Oh. Man, you lying, you ain't never meet no Frank Sinatra.Clarence: [points to Morris, Saul and Sweets] Fuck you, fuck you, and fuck you! Who's next?! |

Great recap of Coming to America. Epic scene.
On the list you provided, Holyfield, in his prime, was very humble, always giving credit to God rather than taking it for himself. Lewis, overall, is the most gracious champ, IMO. He has a little pride, as all competitors must, but is such a great sportsman he represents boxing well. |

Lewis is a definite No.
Old school men is what we should be talking about, by this I mean Floyd Patterson, Marciano, Wallcott, Charles, Gene Tunney etc etc |

I think old George was more self-depreciating more than humble. I never knew when he was being genuine or playing up his act.
I voted Holy, but come to think of it, he wasn't really humble. I always found Lewis to be rather arrogant and smug, and not in the least bit humble. Joe Louis I think really ought to have been on the poll. Even Rocky wasn't really humble. |
