It's not BJJ, it's Braziliansssssss. Renan Barao is going to run Dominick Cruz out the ring come fight night.

I would have to go with wrestling. If your a wrestler you basically decided if the fight is gonna stay standing or taken to the floor

Michael McDonald is going to knock Barao out in such a disgusting manner.

Sonnen's base is wrestling. Maia's base is BJJ.

And?

I assume you showed an example of how BJJ is more effective than Wrestling. What I'm telling you is the gif that you posted is a poor example of that.

What you showed was Maia who practiced in MIXED martial arts since 2001 taking down and submitting someone with over 10 years experience in MMA.

This shows nothing in the area of overall effectiveness of BJJ and wrestling.

Don't be silly.

Maia is as well versed in wrestling as Sonnen is in BJJ...There's **** all mixed about how either guy conducts their business on the ground. It's a valid example as far as I can see

It was a throw straight into a triangle, not set up really at all. In that sense if we count the takedown as the "wrestling" component and the triangle as the BJJ component Maia was better than both.

It show's nothing about who has a better base for MMA.

The basic which is more effective in MMA, you need both of them. But can get away with being a good wrestler with sub defense more than a world class BJJ guy with poor takedowns.

i really hate this term.. "sub defence"
theres no such thing as sub defence.... its all jiu jitsu, your sub defence is your knowledge of jiu jitsu

i do think its important remember that pure BJJ guy will generally beat a equally skilled pure wrestler. but i think the wrestler can benefit more from cross training..and as a base, i think wrestling is better.

Of course it is all part of your knowledge of jiu jitsu. But some wrestlers only have basic (for high level fighters) levels of passing, and submissions from on top and almost no bottom game apart from explode and create a scramble, or hip escape get back to guard create a scramble. Where as they superb top control have very high level defense against submissions and are very hard to tap.

But saying a good wrestler with sub defense is easier.
