hit down, right, x, triangle and then square. Seriously, it's just timing.

Punch him. Aim for the face.

He's a couple of inches smaller than me , he likes to lunge in forward with hooks knocking me back to ropes.

I'm no expert, but what's worked for me in the past is just throwing jabs as they try to come in, sometimes holding my ground or sometimes while taking a step back. This usually results in a) I hit them before they can hit me, b) we hit each other at the same time, or c) neither of us lands a punch but just throwing the jab stops them from lunging in. Ducking as they lunge with the jab and throwing a jab of my own to the body has also worked for me. My coach told me to throw a left hook while pivoting clockwise as they come in, but I've yet to try that. I'm sure others will have some better advice.

-edit-
If I were to spar a guy who likes to lunge in with lead left hooks (assuming both are orthodox), I might try to time his hooks and bob/weave under it and come up with a right hook. Easier said than done though.

If he's knocking you back into the ropes, sounds like you might be squaring up as he lunges in. Keep stepping back with the back foot and let the front foot follow so you always have a good stance. Then you'll be able to counter him.

Sometimes, take one step back, stand ur ground, drop down by bending ur knees a bit and punch back. Sometimes it'll be two steps and stand ur ground. Depends on how much he lunges in. But keep ur stance.

Other times, it could be that when u initiate an attack, he also lunges in. In that case, step in like ur gonna punch, step back immediately, and counter his shit.

When u get a bit comfortable with these, then start learning to step to the side and countering. Step in, step to the side. Step back, step to the side.

If he's constantly catching you with this shot, try circling more and using the jab.

Do you know how to throw any punches? If so, time one of them to land on his face or body as he is lunging in. That's all there is to it, there's no secret. What did you expect, somebody to tell you to watch his left hip and then throw a double right hand? Boxing isn't an equation so I don't know what sort of answer you were expecting.

It's not as simple as just hitting him as he comes in, there is obviously improvements to footwork and positioning that are needed, like boxbible said I'm probably squaring up too much.

When he's lunging in, step to the side. That makes him out of punching position while you're still in position to hit him. It takes a little bit to get the timing down.

And you can add to that a hook. It works really well. Doesnt have to be a monster punch. Just a slight tap to stop his momentum and from there you can add other punches.
