Some fighters can take a dig or 2. (Froch)
Some fighters can't take a dig (Khan) Some fighters have lost their ability to take a dig (Hatton) So do some fighters have stronger chins and are therefore less susceptible to being knocked clean out. Or is down to mental grit and balls of steel. I think its a combination of the 2.

I think it comes down to how hard your head can be smacked and how much your brain can take before cutting out... Staying youthfull and not lashing it up helps your brain from not cutting your senses of to your legs....
On a serious note it is quite a hard question to answer... But i think it does come down to how switched on you are in general look at Khan the bloke is a pudding.. Froch comes across mentally strong and sharp.. |

Khan is clearly fine mentally.
He asks his opponent to hit him, always tries to get up even when he's on rubber legs, goes in to fight mode when he's hurt etc. But his body betrays him and he just can't take punishment. |

Both are involved. Fighters definitely lose it if they take too many. David Haye has clearly massively improved his punch resistance over the course of his career. He took some shots from Wladimir that would have knocked him out a few years before. Look at Ali getting bombed by Henry Cooper and then later standing up to Big George.

There r many factors really-dehydration and diminished cerebral fluid play a part also once uve really been chinned your brain shuts u down to save u the fear and pain, and once its happend once the brain gets used to it and is more likely to react in the same way again.in rickys case I think he knew it was over and didnt hav the mental drive to get up.

There's definitely both elements involved.
Some fighters simply can or simply can't take a shot. Others are awful under fire and unravel - like Khan, whereas fighters like Marquez barely change at all, they're just as composed when on the front foot dominating or being tee'd off on against the ropes. |

Bit of both, I'd say more physical then mental but you do see some guys who go into a state of shock when clocked. I think guys like Khan are happy to be hit. They just can't handle the result..

I'd say mainly physical, you have to be able to move out the way or anticipate punches otherwise your always going to go down or get stunned when hit clean enough..
Khan gets himself off balance and leaves his chin hanging out all the time.. He cant seem to stand his ground at all, he moves in then runs away literally !! He has no ability to stand there and roll with punches.. |

I think Ice is spot on about the Mexican's. There feet very rarely are off the floor they keep themselves grounded and i think that does make a difference. When your feet are off ground and your not seeing punches coming it does leave you so vulnerable. |

Interesting reply. Could you expand please.
Are you suggesting the same as SPB? Whereas SPB is heading down the right road IMO. I wouldnt necessarly agree that a low centre of gravity would be the best benefit regarding the centre of gravity for a boxers defence. Whats your thoughts? Last edited by Its me you see; 11-27-2012 at 05:38 AM. |
