he beat up a fancy jap after the 2nd world war. the diggers loved him for it, as did the whole of australia that went through the war and hated the japs for their atrocities.
thats just part of the story... |

There's enough info available to keep you busy reading through your Christmas holidays if you are genuinely interested in Lionel Rose's career. If you are looking to judge his career purely on numbers, he was 33-2 and held both the WBA & WBC world titles at one point.

Slightly overrated but you need to look at the bigger picture around the time he fought.
He is a well deserved Aussie legend no doubt. Purely on boxing ability he was just short of exceptional. Too many loses on his record also takes the gloss off his achievements |

theres no doubt at all that as an aboriginal australian it was huge he went over to japan and beat fighting harada just after the war...allthe elements make it an incredible achievemenet in australian sport and an important part of history for this country...
but lot has fuck all to do with what i am talking about. im wondering why so many get all this mixed up with boxing ability and then put rose on the greatest aussie boxers of all time lists. im talking about boxing only....he was overrated. |

I don't think he was over rated but he did have a short prime probably because he really struggled with weight and other problems outside the ring.
But The fact is he was a duel WBA WBC champion who went overseas and took the belt off the champ in his backyard. It was a huge feat for us at the time and if you have any doubt about how big a deal it was you only have to look at the parade they had in Melbourne for Lionel where more than 250 thousand ppl turned up to cheer him. ![]() If you want to see Rose in his prime watch his fight against Rocky Gattellari where he went up to Sydney and gave Rocky the biggest boxing lesson you'll see. Calling Rose overrated on an Aussie forum is almost sacrilege..... however LJD has a point his prime was very brief but extremely effective.
His overall career might be a tad overrated is probably where the OP is going with it. |

It was a different era and he won legitimate world titles when they REALLY FUCKING MEANT SOMETHING. Compare that to some faggot like Mundine who even in this era of 4 recognised bodies can only win interim titles or ibo shit. So to be a Mundine fan and say that Lionel Rose was overrated is like saying filet mignon is overrated while you sit eating dog food from a can with a spoon.

exactly. lionel fought in an era of one title holder. and no super this or junior that. just one title. he was lucky to even get a shot! so many great fighters never even got a shot! |
