We often get the threads about who was the best not to win/challenge for a 'World title'. And so often (normally down in part to me), we just end up debating as to what qualifies as a 'world title'. So I thought I would put a slight spin on an interesting idea; so...
Who was the best fighter to never beat a top 10 contender (or champion)? If we use 'The Ring' as a way of clarifing who's or what 'top 10' means; who is the best fighter to not beat a top 10 contender? This would include fighters who got a top 10 rating, without winning a fight against one of their peers. The only exception I would ask, is not to include fighters who were sadly taken from us 'too early'. 'Too early' would be a fighter who had their last fight under the age 30, with less than 40 pro fights to their name. Last edited by TBooze; 12-04-2012 at 06:48 PM. |

Bobby Vanzie was as good as Hatton or Witter and looked like he may win a world title, got polaxed by Romanov before being robbed twice against Earl in fights he dominated for his British title. Vanzie went 1-1 with Witter in the amateurs, they were rivals both from Bradford, their fathers didn't like each other either
Romanov might fall in that bracket too, thought he beat Earl too after being inactive, he was world class then disapeared |

Spencer Oliver was pretty good.
A current one is Darren barker. Chisora was robbed v helenius but he has respect as a top fighter. Can't remember if Guinn ever beat anyone but he ranked pretty high. |

I know dyna is joking but it always struck me that Chavez is the avatar for 'great guy who beat a bunch of bums'. His contemporary, Pernell Whitaker, did not beat any more top guys than Chavez and fought several bums himself but no one ever looks at Whitaker and says "He fought a 3-6 guy in the middle of his title reign, he only beat bums.'

Does Shane Knox qualify.
He had world class skills and was undefeated, but seemed to have simply lost interest and retired early, before he had beaten a top 10 opponent. |
