How good was Fernando Vargas?

He rushed up too soon, but he was a very talented boxer puncher. He was boxing brilliantly at time against a prime Trinidad. He took some heavy shots in that fight and never recovered. Tough.

People calling his chin poor need to lay off Boxrec and get a career set.

He took loads of flush power from the likes of Tito, Oscar, and Sugar before any of them were able to stop him...and it isn't like any of them knocked him out for a ten count...let alone out cold. Let me reiterate: these were monster punchers, and they nailed him with some of their best stuff, and he went down but never out.

Name me a junior middleweight who wouldn't be at the very least dropped by the shots Trinidad, Mosley, and De La Hoya decked him with. You're going to come up with a very short list.

Even shot to shit, he was taking bombs from Mayorga who's no daisy.

No not really. I dont even look at boxrec. Every time he got hit he would flop around on the floor. He couldnt take a solid shot. He was mediocre. Decent skill set but he was never very good to begin with.

It's not that he rushed into the Trinidad fight, it's that he fought it stupidly as hell. Before his back issues, Vargas had good boxing ability which he mostly abandoned when he fought Trinidad.

He was getting caught by Tito even when he was in his boxing mode. Tito simply slipped a jab and countered with a left hook in the first when he dropped Vargas. Vargas came back to drop Tito in the 4th (Tito followed up with a low blow), and Vargas still dominated the 5th by boxing and using angles. In the 6th, Vargas was still trying to box and use the ring when Tito caught him near the ropes and landed a hard right hand with about 30 seconds left in the round. Vargas tried to hold Trinidad a little bit after that. Merchant said the right hand landed around the neck. It may have.

Then for the next two rounds, Vargas was still trying to box and use the ring and pick his spots, and was having some success (particularly with body blows in round , but was still getting caught with hard long right hands.

Then it was the 9th when Vargas really tried to war with Tito, and took a lot of hard shots in that round.

Should have quit against Trinidad in round 9. He was like fuck it and got his career and health ruined by Trinidad in rounds 10, 11 and 12

I dont know if it was his boyish good looks but it seems like he got a pass for getting caught with steroids. Like Margarito got a worse sentence than Vargas did.
