Boxing 'terms': What they mean and what they mean on the Internet.

I was looking through the General forum for the first time today in years. And I have come to the following conclusions on what the terms robbery, great/greatness, shot and wasted talent mean:

Robbery

Real meaning: A fight in which everybody who saw it, but the officials, believe the wrong person won the fight.

Internet meaning: My favourite fighter lost, but edged the second round.

Great/Greatness

Real meaning: A fighter or fight that compares favourably to the very best of its peers in the history of the sport.

Internet meaning: A fight/fighter that in context was good or better.

Shot

Real meaning: A formerly good fighter or better, who is now losing to fighters who would not even of been in the same Town, let alone the same ring as the fighter in their prime.

Internet meaning: Someone who is unexpectedly knocked down.

Wasted talent

Real meaning: A fighter who over a significant length of time has shown talent, and an ability to be distracted from the sport, at the cost of moving up the rankings.

Internet meaning: Anybody who loses their '0'/Anybody who loses in an upset.

"Exposed" Real meaning: When a fighter with flaws has said flaws revealed to he world in often brutal fashion.

Internet meaning: Somebodies most hated fighter finally got beat.

Ducking.

Real Meaning - A fighter is scared to fight another fighter because he will know he will lose.

Internet Meaning - The above but without considering things like, money, TV deals, promoters at war, actually any rational explanation other than the fighter is scared.

Its a pet hate of mine and its fucking absurd.

"Bum"

Real meaning: A tramp, or maybe a boxer who is completely out of shape, has no desire whatsoever to win and will happily fall over for the sake of a pay day. Very rare indeed.

Internet meaning: Any fighter who is overmatched, has a moderate record, or in some cases anybody who isn't above domestic class.

This term is often used on ESB and it generally shows ignorance and a lack of respect from casual fans who mainly get their boxing wisdom from the back pages of the Sun newspaper.

Cherry Picking

Real meaning: Choosing an opponent who most people consider a soft touch & over whom one enjoys a stylistic advantage.

Internet meaning: Choosing anyone who is not an ATG in his prime

Internet - anyone who has ever been KOd in any circumstance.

Real meaning: Someone who is given a boxing lesson for 10 or more of the 12 round fight and out classed in every department over the duration of the fight, a la Calzaghe/Lacy.

Internet meaning: Someone that loses a fight 7-5 or 8-4.

Real meaning: A fighter's conditioning being drastically hampered after dropping down in weight.

Internet meaning: An excuse I'll use to either discredit a fighter's win, or explain my fighter's humiliating loss.

Internet; someone who knocks over 20+ guys multiple times to force a stoppage. Guys that he outsizes and aren't ranked.
