"A teleconference was set up in my office in New York for July 30th, 2002, and on the call was myself, Don King who was in the room, Frank ****** and Bernard Hopkins' lawyer, Arnold Joseph. Along with Arnold was a woman named Linda Carter, who was there on behalf of Bernard. We asked Arnold if Bernard wanted to fight Joe Calzaghe and we asked him how much money would he want if he did. The response we got was $3million and the fight would have to take place in the United States. After a little scratching of the head, we said 'Okay, done.' Frank ****** agreed on the spot, Don King agreed and we agreed so as far as we were concerned all parties were singing off the one hymm sheet. Arnold excused himself with Linda and I can only assume it was to call Bernard. Either that day or the next day, they came with a new demand: $6million, double the sum that had been agreed, the deal blew up.....he had then and still has no desire to fight Joe Calzaghe, that much is pretty clear."

Joe gets criticised sometimes for not having fought the big-name Americans, but in this case the fault has never rested with him."

Make your mind up based on all that. I for one think Bhop turned down a chance to fight Joe and was offer $6,000,000 according to one source
Doesn't matter how often you bring that quote up they'll still talk shit. Fact is Calzaghe beat him during his greatest run of wins anyway. After he had beaten Wright and Tarver and before he beat Pavlick.

Couldn't put it better myself

Also after the fight with Bhop going on to beat pavlik and pascal you can hardly argue that Bhop was finished for or after the fight

The minute Hopkins made the comment ''Id never lose to a white boy'' He was never going to get a decision. I could imagine that pissed a lot of the American big-wigs off.

But his resume is diabolical.

Even if you give him a pass for not fighting Jones, Hopkins or toney when they were near their primes, there is a ton of other people he could have fought, and beat who would have improved his legacy.

Glen Johnson, Antonio tarver, Kelly pavlik, sven ottke, Anthony Mundine, Carl froch, chad Dawson, jermain Taylor.

You'd back him to beat all of them but he didn't fight them.

Andre Ward eclipsed calzaghes entire career in two years.

Joe has to go down as a huge disappointment
Let's get this straight, Tarver, Ottke, Taylor, Froch (despite all the shit he used to talk), Wright and Taylor all turned down decent contracts for a fight.

Just a shame Calzaghe wasn't in a tournament that was crookedly set up to get big name boxers to fight him in his back yard.

Not that I'm denying Ward's ability. He's an amazing boxer.

Were the judges all white supremacists or something? That was probably just something he said to stir up hype in the fight. Furthermore I scored the fight 116-111 to Joe anyway so I feel he won anyway as do most people to be honest

It was tighter than that mate, in no way can you give a 4 round win to any of the fighters.

I thought Calzaghe just nicked it.

The point Im trying to make that in a close fight and it was close, the comments made by Hopkins didn't help him that was still fresh in peoples minds.

It was a close fight but quite a few rounds are either or and first time I scored it I got 116-111 same as one of the judges. I might rewatch it even though it's a horrible fight. Let's not forget other despicable things BHop did like fake lowblows to get a breather.

I still don't think those comments really affected the scoring but who know I guess

I think I only had Calzaghe by a point or maybe 3 but Hopkins should have had points taken.

Near his peak?

It was calzaghe's second from last fight and he was what, 37 years old?

I still can't make a case for Calzaghe beating Hopkins, you don't score point for flapping your arms around wildly and missing with hundreds of punches. It's hard to make a case for Hopkins winning it either but at least he lands some scoring punches albeit in between rolling around like a fanny and pretending to be punched in the nuts.

So retiring as a 46-0 undefeated world champion with wins over future Hall of Famer's is a wasted career now?

No ****ing wonder I don't post in the boxing forums.
