Duran. Both Monzon and Hagler were top three all time middleweights, imo but we would be talking about a past prime Duran, while Napoles was still at his best,I think. |

I would say if they both won we would be splitting hairs in determining the better win...They would both be considered IMHO top 10 upset/biggest wins in history.
Perhaps a good question might be who would win Duran/Napoles??? |

Bob Arum said prefight....the reason he made the Duran vs Hagler fight was he saw them together at a Boxing Banquet one nite, and they were both pretty much the same size.
Whereas, Monzon was much bigger than Napoles. |

Monzon I rate over Hagler, but only Monzon..I consider Hagler the second best middleweight champion of all time. When napoles signed to fight Monzon, many, many experts believed that Napoles would outclass Monzon..I remember that because i was around at the time. one of these "experts" was the man in Napoles' corner, angelo Dundee, who thought that his man would make the "slow and clumsy Monzon" look like a wooden statue. After the fight, Dundee hailed Monzon as a "super champion". In hindsight, Monzon is thought to have been "too big" for Napoles,...but that sure as hell wasn't the sentiment in '74, just before they fought. Like I said, 50/50 hindsight.
Duran only went 15 with Hagler because Marvin showed him too much respect and didn't fight the right kind of fight. If they rematched, hagler would have stopped Duran. More intriguing is Napoles-Duran. Napoles was DeJesus squared..a superior fighter. Napoles would have beaten Duran by decision...and would have deked him along the way. To answer the thread's question, Napoles over Monzon or Duran over hagler,...both would have been massive upsets. That's by ttoday's perspective. Back in '74, it wouldn't have surprised the "experts" at all to see Napoles beat Monzon...and I'm sure that there were some Duran believers that thought Roberto could have beaten Hagler. |
