No, Margarito and Bute won't be first ballot Hof'ers. It's not solely about fame, it's about what you bring to the sport. C'mon guys, if Willard and McGuigan get a place then I'll be damned if Gatti, whose brought many fans to the sport and produced some of the most amazing battles of all time doesn't.

There's a reason it's called the Hall of Fame, not the hall of the ATG's, or the hall of the great resume's, etc.

Goes to show that being beloved will overshadow being great after some time has passed. IMO, nostalgia shouldn't play this much of a factor into HOF nominations. Should be all about putting in the best of the best.

Let's see if Ivan Robinson gets in.

Then fuck that, Mickey Ward needs to be in.

This guy had how many Fight of the Year and FOTY runner up his whole career.

I wonder what is holding the voting panel back?

Yeah, but Stallone is clearly defined as being inducted as a non participant.I'm saying Gatti shouldn't be included under the same category as say,Duran.
It should be made clear and categories should be more defined if this is the way ahead.
And going on what some here are saying,Pernell has no place in the HOF.

Yeah, more of like the guy got inducted due to entertainment value.

I see where Pity is coming from, the guys inducted to the hall, or to put it simply, the hall was made for men who accomplished a lot in the sport. Do you really believe Gatti belongs in the same sentence at Robinson, Ali, Armstrong among others?

They should put a new category for that, entertainment value. Completely separated from actual greatness.

The problem is, Gatti was a participant. The Hall would need to add a "fan favorite" or "warrior" category.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Hatton would be a logical next guy in that wing, and a guy like Dwight Muhammad Qawi would stand a chance.

To be fair, I don't think reason comes into it as far as the IBHOF is concerned. You have a cabal of americocentric voters applying their own subjective slant on poorly defined criteria, which inevitably leads to anomalous results. It really comes down to them making up their own rules as they go along so that it becomes a curious hodgepodge of accomplishment and acclaim.

Getting back to Gatti, if he is indeed undeserving, he is far and away the most deserving underserving fighter in Canastota. It's a great moment for those close to him and his fans, which ultimately is probably more important than whatever integrity the IBHOF has left.

Yeah. I think it is, in its simplest form, a place to congregate any and all well-known fighters.
Almost everyone who knows Gatti know of his ring wars and his ability to produce blood-curdling battles.
Hence, the voters in Canastota look at his overall body of work (which is quite good, no matter how you slice it), his willingness to fight anybody, and his legendary bouts.

Is he an ATG? No. Far from it. But he was a well-known persona and an awesome fighter. He'll get in just like Corrales, Hatton, McGuigan, etc. Will/have.

That's exactly what I mean mate.No problem with his induction if it was clearly defined as being separate from the names mentioned.

Now DMQ is a fabulous suggestion for a new category.Maybe it could even be called "The Arturo Gatti Special Achievement Award" letting everyone know it's based on great contribution through excitement and/or bravery.

He doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. It is a disgrace to the fighters in there for him to be there, because as a fighter he was a under achiever and quite frankly at his best nothing more than a belt holder.
