Ruben could box and slug while Carlos was more of a pure slugger. I still say Ruben is the best Mexican boxer ever. At their bantamweight prime I think he ko's Carlos

I can't see why it would go the distance whichever way the result went.

Yes, Pintor and Zarate went the full 15 rounds, but Zarate, Oliveras, and also Pintor for that matter, made careers out of KOing people.

I think only one of Oliveras and Zarate would be left standing, perhaps Oliveras.

i'm a huge fan of Ruben Olivares, but look,...Castillo and Herrera were able, at 118, to deck and ko him. You're saying Zarate wouldn't have?

The more I think about it, the more heavily I favor Zarate. I think one would have to. Both can box (I disagree heavily with the statement here by one poster that said he was more of a slugger. He was a highly scientific threshing machine, there was an awful lot of boxing science that went into what he did, just as much as Olivares), both could punch like crazy......the main difference was in how each was affected by return fire, and Ruben could be had. Zarate was a tougher nut to crack.

All other things being equal then, I use the durability angle as the tiebreaker and pick Zarate by stoppage before the tenth.

I think that is spot on. Though it has very hard to pick against the Olivares that beat Lionel Rose, I think that Zarate would probably beat him.

Not sure who McGrain's quote was intended for you or Rooster??? You don't usually have an agenda and disrupt things, and he is not usually in attack mode so I am not sure???? I don't agree w/ Zarate being a simple slugger, but I don't think you quite meant it the way it sounded!

Either way...God bless Philadelphia!

Whats Up? Wasn't sure what was up with that either. I mean, I'm as entitled to my opinion as the next guy. The fight is really a toss-up to me but since I had to make a pick I went with my man Ruben. Didn't mean Carlos was a simple slugger, just trying to make a quick pick. I'm in the burbs so can't make it to Oregon ave. Gotta lay off the cheesesteaks anyway. Thanks for the shoutout

Olivares, yes...he was a puncher but his boxing skills were still great.

Alexis Arguello in his prime (one of my all time favourite fighters) was being outboxed by a past his prime Olivares before Arguello hooked him outta there.

"Go away" was aimed at the match up, which is an impossible one to decipher.

I like Olivares...but admittedly biased as hell though.

Hmm...

Olivares wasn't iron chinned but it took punchers like Lopez and arguello some time to beat him down. I wonder if Olivares isn't stronger as well...
