Use have probably seen this before but Marquez sparring for the 4th fight, lands the same punch on a sparring partner. 34 seconds mark.

I think Holyfield's reputation as a dirty fighter (something Ive read a lot on ESB) is largely undeserved.

He was very streetwise & well versed in the dark arts but never went out of his way to fight a dirty fight.

Holy just wouldnt let anyone intimidate him & if anyone tried to rough him up by foul means he would respond in kind.

Mares gets an unfair rap for that too. Agbeko 1 aside (when the ref should've stepped in and been more authorative about the low blows), there have been mitigating circumstances in all his fights at world level.

The sheer volume of body punches, and the angles at which he sometimes throws the punch from, make it inevitable that some will stray low. It doesn't mean that he isn't a good body puncher/a dirty fighter though

Saw that a while ago I think. I watched Hopkins - Trinidad a couple of times last week, love that fight.

There was something posted on here a while back from a magazine where Hopkins was giving technical tips, I can remember that being a pretty good read.

On the Bunce hour yesterday, he had Glen Johnson on and Johnson was asked the question, who is the most difficult and hardest fighter to fight, He said Bernard Hopkins and this man has fought them all in his era.

Interesting he also mentioned Chad Dawson as the most talented fighter he faced?

Yeah, that's interesting, Bill. Sometimes fighters just tend to bullshit when asked those type of questions. But Glenn is not the sort to BS.

Chad has undoubted talent. Just the wrong head on the right body though.

The thing is though. For the most part. i think he knows what he's doing. IMHO he's conciously being dirty when he's going low. It happens too many times for it to be a coincidence. I think Mares knows how bad a low blow can affect an opponent. That video of him on that programme when he was younger is very telling. They explained to him how and why low blows are so debilitating and i can assume from that he knows what he's doing. As SPB says, it's not like he tries to disguise it either. At least Barrera and Pedroza were sly and cunning with it.

It was evident In the Ward fight, I think he came in with a mentality of a challenger it looked that way to me?

Weird when you consider that on a technical level he is one of the few fighters that can match him.

Tbh. I don't think Dawson likes fighting. I think he does it because he can and because his father pushed him into it. But i get the impression that he would rather be doing something else.

I haven't seen that video so can't really comment on that. I'm not saying that he has never gone out with the intention of making it rough to unsettle his opponent- in fact quite the opposite, I'm sure it's been part of his tactics against guys like Moreno. But I have to take issue with the fact that he is a dirty fighter full stop. Low blows were not an issue in either Agbeko II or Morel and I think the worse cases of him fouling by going low have been at least in part due to his head being pulled down by the likes of Vic or Moreno when getting inside. It does make me laugh at times the hypocrisy of a young fighter like Mares being labelled a scumbag by some who then in turn praise veteran fighters for "old manning" an opponent with a few rough tricks here in there.

I never called him a 'scumbag'. I'm actually a fan of his. And if you were around on this site in about 2009 you will remember me hyping this kid up. But it's just my opinion that he's intentionally dirty. I don't see much wrong with roughouse tactics but intentional low blows are below the belt (no pun intended). I actually admire fighters who can incorporate some roughhouse tactics and use it to their advantage. It's up to the opponent to raise hell. You can admit a fighter is dirty, and still be a fan.
