From another thread by poster John Garfield:
"If Willie abstained from sex, RJJ, it could only have been long enough to down a bottle of J&B When I first met Rocky Graziano at Stillman's Gym, he was hitting a speed bag 'n smoking a cigarette, as most of the ATG's were between rounds of sparring. Smoking 'n drinking was considered macho then. All the trainers smoked cigars." Hey it worked for the all time greats, smoking between rounds is the key. |

Jack Dempsey thoughts on training
I understand that Dempsey in preparing for his fight against Jess Willard, that his manager and trainer were worried about him going stale, cos the camp was a long one. Their answer was to alternate one week of training with one week of rest. He also wouldn't eat anything for a whole day once a month, "To give my body a rest." His camp cook would wrap the cooked meat in a towel to drain off any excess fat. He jogged 7 to 10 miles a day, then he would take a hot and cold shower and a rubdown before breakfast. Breakfast consisted of meat and vegatables. After breakfast,he took a nap after that he sprinted a few miles. In the afternoon he done exercises and sparring. After that some more sprinting before dinner. This training regiment led to one of the most sensational title win's ever, that is talked about to this day. Youtube has it, if you haven't seen it do, The Willard- Dempsey fight. |

The accomplishment would be having a basic understanding of strength and conditioning training to give such an opinion, hell, having some common sense would tell you smoking isn't the best of ideas, let alone while training.I think dealt with is showing some obvious issues with old school training which some hold in such high regard (although I doubt they agree with this stuff). When you see something as stupid as smoking while training I don't see the problem with him calling it out as you put it. He's just showing that old school isn't/wasn't always the best method. Oh so I need to be a world champion boxer before I can say that smoking isn't good for your fitness. I better put these books down written by these scientists with no credibility because they were never world champion boxers. If I become more successful at punching people in the head while I get punched in the head then I'll be intelligent enough to comment on what we're doing to our bodies.. gotcha.

I have published articles in scientific journals from my post-grad research that I'm not going to link to (I prefer to stay anonymous and I don't want any of my colleagues names to be associated with my sometimes rants and silly comments on a message board), if you think that makes me a wannabe then great. Newsflash.. I don't actually care what you think, I don't have to disprove what you believe when you don't know anything about me. Being a bit self-important there you think, who are you to demand credentials? Feel free to provide me with some credentials on why I should conversate with you. I believe you're a bit stupid, prove me wrong and I might talk to you. I don't have all the answers, nobody does. But I know a hell of a lot more than the likes of dempsey4321. I'm stirring him up because he is a moron that is against any advances in sport, he is into hero worshipping of the past and sees no problems with anything they do in regards to training. That's the sort of attitude that keeps people dumb and averse to growth. |
