It's not like they fought the likes of Tua, Tyson, Lewis, Wladimir, etc, all much bigger guys with much better one punch KO power than Shavers or any of the cruisers masquerading as heavies back in the day.

Shavers ain't shit
Those who fought Shavers such as Lyle (rated Shavers as hardest puncher), Ali (rated Shavers as hardest puncher), Norton (rated Shavers as hardest puncher), Tillis (rated Shavers as hardest puncher), Holmes (rated Shavers as hardest puncher), and Cobb (rated Shavers as hardest puncher) all disagree.

Who are we to tell that many people that they are wrong and others hit harder? A lot more goes into a knockout than sheer power.

I wonder if someone who is around now fought 70 D level bums, KO'd them all, and lost to some greats would be considered one of the hardest punchers EVER?

Probably not.

Shavers is the definition of golden era HW bias.

Nobody is claiming Shavers was a great fighter, but every single fighter who faced him, win or lose, walked away saying nobody hit harder than Shavers.

Shavers fought guys who shared the ring with Foreman, Tyson, Bonecrusher Smith, Liston, Frazier, Cooney, Mercer, McCall, Morrison, Bruno, and Weaver. When common oponents comment on hard punchers, every single one of them state Shavers was the hardest puncher they shared the ring with.

Shavers had more power than any other heavyweight, but what he lacked was stamina, accuracy, and punch selection. He was not a good finisher, which is what allowed the better fighters he faced to get through the rough patches (which they all ended up having against Shavers) and to go on to win. The lesser fighters Shavers faced were not able to avoid the shots the better fighters avoided. When Shavers landed, he shook up even the most iron chinned of fighters.

Rocky Marciano's big right hook the "Suzy Q" had all the power of an armour piercing hellfire missle. Can't believe nobody has mentioned him yet.

Biggest puncher that I actually watched on live TV is Lennox Lewis.

Of all time? I have no idea.

Nigel Benn hit pretty damn hard for a middleweight.

- But what does "P4P" even mean when talking about punching power? I don't quite understand the question.

Julian Jackson is probably #1.

Marciano is also likely very, very high on the list. At 187 lbs, he punched harder than 99% of heavyweights that were larger than he was.

Carbajal is a puncher that does not get mentioned often in these, threads, so I'm throwing his name into the hat.

It means how hard you can punch relative to your bodyweight, since punching power generally increases with increased weight. A middleweight who knocks other middleweights unconscious with single punches is likely a harder puncher P4P than a heavyweight who bludgeons them into TKOs, even though the latter might hit harder in a literal sense.

Joe Lois the brown bomber? I know many guys who hit hard Wilfredo gomez/hearns but Joe had that special power to KO anybody even the guy with the most granite chin & turn it into glass. That's what makes Robinson/Joe so great they didn't just posses/rely on their skill set they were killers & took there's.Being 2 of the top p4p punchers ever doesn't either.Robinson can make a great case as well, part of the reason why he's regarded as the best is that infamous knock your lights punch that can finish any great fighter on any given moment.
