hella disapointing choice...... i thought being on showtime and stepping up a bit last time meant there was no going back. i love watching wilder but he needs to test himself agaist someone decent. top 50 type at least

is it asking too much for his shitty management to plan his career a little better? granted it has only been a month since his last fight, but this fight is garbage enough that they should have something lined up afterwards worthy of a guy who will be 27-0 (27 KOs) and holder of a bronze medal. but they dont and thats the sad part.

If GBP wants to get Wilder proper opponents, they are going to have to spend some serious money. Offer a large guarantee to the prospective opponent, win or lose. Take a fighter like Price, or fury, or Jennings: What possible reason would they have for facing Wilder right now? If they win, there is no glory, and they would be facing a guy that, no matter how inexperienced, no matter how suspect some idiots think his chin is, can KO them with one punch, from either hand. Go down the opposition-tier a little bit, and things don't really change. It doesn't even matter if you think he has skills or not. Wilder is all-risk / no reward. There would have to be a HUGE payday, guaranteed. GBP would likely have to literally LOSE money on Wilder's next few fights, and evidently they aren't willing to invest in their product. ------------- And like I've said numerous times before, this is not just a problem with Wilder. The same situation holds true, to varying extents, for Price, Boytsov, and many other "dangerous but 2nd / 3rd tier fighters in all divisions. It's a problem with the sport as a whole, but no one seems to want to discuss it much. Easier to just rag on the fighters, I guess, from behind your little computer keyboard. |

Without reading I'm going to guess that someone is going to bring up Greer's 86.6% KO ratio, the fact that Wilder only fought a month ago and something about a lack of amateur experience to legitimize him facing another bum.

Actually, Wilder only had 32 amateur fights, FWIW.
32 whole fights, and he won the Golden Globes, made the Olympic team, & won a bronze medal. He was KD'd by Harold Sconiers, who was basically a cab driver, but that was Wilder's 13th pro fight, and his 45th fight EVER. Yeah, he made a mistake. Then he got up & KO'd Sconiers in the 4th. He's fought mostly bums, but he's had lousy management, he's too dangerous for most fighters to agree to fight him, and he needs to fight constantly to pay for his daughters huge medical bills. Give the guy a fucking break already. |

32 fights then. Fine, it's not a lot, but he's had what, four years, five, as a pro? Nothing wrong with stay-busy fights, nothing wrong with being brought along gradually, but Wilder's pro career has shown very little progression, it's for the most part just a string of fat and/or short bums.
If you really, REALLY wanna bring up a lack of amateur career; Hopkins had less than Wilder, and by 26 fights into his pro career had already faced RJJr and had generally been facing a better standard of opposition than Wilder has. He then fought Glen Johnson a few fights later. Wilder really doesn't have too many good excuses. |
