I doubt that was the reason, Tyson was fucking up bad n not doing his job outside the ring, as for the main question, I believe the mental part is 50%25% skill and 25% training if I have to choose by percentage.

It depends on the fighter, doesn't it? You can' throw a statement across the board on everybody for something that general. For instance, Sahaprom was notoriously emotional and wore everything on his sleeve, and most of his title reign hinged upon the fragility of his focus and positivity of his emotional well-being. If he was all smiles in there, clowning around, you knew he was going to come out on top! But as soon as he started pouting his lips he was in for a beating. That's why they called him "The Thai Baer".

It can be used to fuel the fire, brainwash a man into thinking he's on a mission, sometimes by God (Guerrero) so sometimes athletes take it to the highest level their bodies can take and they won't take no for an answer despite all odds.

If a fighter harness the emotion and use it to fuel his desire to win, yeah that's what Douglas did.
If a fighter is driven by his emotion, expecially anger, he will lose his focus instead. Once, there was a superbantam champ named Jaime Garza, who was 40-0, 38 ko's. His challenger was Juan "Kid" Meza who actually went to the champion, who was enjoying a meal at that time, and told him it will be his last. Come fight time, the enraged Garza tore through Meza and scored a knockdown. However, his wildness and over-eagerness would prove to be his undoing. Meza countered him and scored a comeback KO in the very first round. |

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it's too much to handle.
