So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

And I see not in my blindness
What the objects were I wrought,
But as God rules o'er our bickerings
It was through His will I fought.

So forever in the future,
Shall I battle as of yore,
Dying to be born a fighter,
But to die again, once more."

The following is how I live my life. I have done some pretty impressive things since I've been away. But that's in the past. Time for new pr's

“Death plays a huge role in why men climb, in the way they climb and why some of them eventually quit climbing in the high mountains. Alpinism often means high risk and the loss of life. Your friends may die up there in the clouds, in storms, swept away by avalanches, or cowering under a volley of stones. Perhaps they’ll freeze to death alone at the bottom of a deep, dark crevasse or sit down to rest and never get up again. This is the long fall, where the sky is rose and the mountains have never been as beautiful as they are today. Life bleeds away from a head injury, unnoticed. It’s about climbers dying doing what they love and spectators speculating, judging, and maybe having the last world. Alpinism is the story of men and the risks men take, the ones they are equal to, the ones they barely get away with, and those risks that kill them. It is about obsession. The danger and the glory, the addiction of going harder, higher, longer. Sometimes we get away with it, we survive when others do not.”

"Deep in my cells I know there's something bad at the end if I don't get through it. This keeps me honest. It keeps me scared. I am stronger because I know there is a consequence. I know I can't get away with slacking off. This is what happens when you ascend above mediocrity. It's a game. It's a test. It is the way I live my life."

Disaster hits....garage door shuts with opener inside. Got stomach flu same night.

Wed

Depression sets in. Quitting becomes so lovely.

I went to the edge, I thought it was important. I thought the view would be crystal clear. Now I don't care. I give in. I give up. I just want to be ordinary, to have meager needs and mediocre ambitions. I want each day to be enough on its own, without risk or fear or the pressure to succeed. I wish I was like everybody else.

-Mark Twight

Thursday

I noticed I have been pushing myself. I guess I did not realize it. I play a lot of mind games with myself. Telling my mind it's 275lbs when in fact, I have 295 on my back.

I can see why I cracked mentally during the week. But, I recovered and I have to push harder. Just like I did with my distance training at this point last year.

I don't know anything else....push, climb, scratch claw up that mountain. Cry, bleed, bitch, growl....get knocked down, get back up and continue the fight.

"When I first saw Mark Twight, he had just started climbing. A skinny, intense kid, he moved easily between rage and humor, contempt and the need to be recognized as superior. He told me about big dreams, which are the only kind worth having. Over the next 15 years he proved that even his dreams were smaller than the spirit he would create. "

I am working on paying forward what Mark and people like him have inspired me to tackle.

The bigger the mountain, the higher the risk, the further and harder the fall. But, the reward for having conquered oneself is exquisite in it's pleasure.

“The average is the borderline that keeps mere
men in their place. Those who step over the line are heroes by the very
act. Go.”

Same, working hard and trying to box in between. Most is fine. Except today is a bit of a shitty day, exactly 8 years ago since pops died.

I've been playing around with rep schemes. Researching mind techniques to get me through the current squat training and Crossfit....no, EXCEL at the current volume.

All bases must be covered before taking on the Smolov squat program on top of comps and Crossfit.

Recon Ron Pullups program 9,7,6,5,5

Squat

135lbs x5
x7
x10

205lbs x3
x5

255lbs x1
x2

275lbs x5

295lbs x3
x1
x1
x1
x1

255lbs x5

Started the Smolov.

Only running the Smolov base cycle.

This will be one to remember.

4x9 @ 225lbs

5x7 @ 245lbs

7x5 @ 255lbs

10x3 @ 265lbs

Took over an hour and a half to complete.

It's pretty brutal as the second week calls for an increase of 20lbs to all the above numbers and then 10 more lbs the following week before taking a week off and attempting a new PR when ready.

Oh, forgot to mention I ran 3 miles with 40 lbs of gear and pushups of 30-20-10 for each mile.

“ You can get what you want. Never sell out. Don't break. Don't weaken. Don't let the kindness of strangers be your salvation, for it is no salvation at all. Unless you sleep alone, you sleep with the enemy. Never come out of the storm. On the other hand, maybe you should. You don't have what it takes to go the hard way. Come out of the cold and sit by the fire. Let them warm you with the smiles and promise of friendship's fortune. Lose your edge. A soft body and chained mind suit you. Chances are you don't have what it takes to walk the frozen trail. Stay home and relax.”
