Default Alexander Frenkel

What the hell happened there?

He capped off a very nice two-year run in 2009 & 2010 by scoring a savage Knockout Of The Year candidate against Enzo Maccarinelli...

...then vanished.

FOR TWO AND A HALF YEARS, IN HIS PRIME!!

The only semblance of explanation is from this Scene article in October 2011...thirteen months after the Maccarinelli KO.

Quote:
European cruiserweight champion Alexander Frenkel (23-0, 18KOs) of Germany says he is suffering from burn-out and will take a break until the year's end. The 26-year-old ... had been due to mount a defense on October 22 in Ludwigsburg in southern Germany.

"We noticed even at training he wasn't really into it. Added to that, he suffered a hand injury," said Sauerland Event's Chris Meyer, confirming a report ... that Frenkel was to take a break.

"Everyone deals with it (pressure) differently. Some drive fast cars, others go after beautiful women. Alexander is rather more the type to worry a lot about it."
So, that's it? Top rated young powerful cruiserweight, gets ants in his pants and throws it all away?

By now he should be poised for a Euro showdown with some other hot up-and-comer like Chakhkiev, Masternak or Kiladze...or even challenging Diablo, since he was for a long time prior to his disappearance the WBC #2 contender.

What is with chronic anxiety ruining talented young athlete's careers? (Frenkel, Royce White in the NBA). It seems a new phenomenon.

He is still only 27, so it isn't out of the question he can course-correct if he pulls his head out of his ass. Especially where cruisers and heavies age on a different scale from lighter boxers. Still...

Didn't he retire due to depression?
I'm not sure what happened in this particular case, but on a different note IMO modern day atheles distract themselves with a lot of things that come once you get even remotely famous. It happens in every sport and some people just lose motivation somewhere along the way. They don't appreciate what they have. And the saddest thing is they don't even realise that there are thousands of people that would kill just to have the opportunity to be in their shoes for a day.

That's excellent news! I'm a big Frenkel fan and I hope he comes back as good as ever. The sport needs punchers like him. I know he hasn't had the opportunity to prove it consistently at the highest level yet but I think he was one of the best one punch KO artists in the entire sport. He looked like a real natural born puncher too, so compact and explosive. He claims to have scored many KOs like the Enzo Maccarinelli one in the amateurs, which is downright scary as KOs of that savage nature are a rarity in the pro ranks let alone the amateur ones.

I remember someone saying here on esb that he and Huck hated each other. The fact that they trained together make Frenkel leave, too much bad blood.

Don't know if that's true though.

Huck vs. Frenkel sounds awesome. Hope they settle the score.

Heard that Wegner even forbade them from sparring each other, due to the altercations

Frenkel and Huck hated eachother, used to spar and Frenkel knocked Huck out twice and Wegner forbid them from sparring after he handed Huck his ass. People who hang around the Sauerland gym witnessed it.

The poster Ronnie Horsh... goes to the gyms in Germany sometimes and knows some of the people. Someone should ask him.
