Default duran v leonard greatness comparison.

Was Duran a greater lightweight than Leonard was a welterweight?

Was Duran's victory over Leonard greater than Leonard's over Hagler?

Does Duran compare to Leonard resume wise across a whole career?

Does Duran compare to Leonard skillwise in a peak for peak comparison?

Does Duran's weight hopping compare to Leonard's

For casual fans it seems Leonard it the default choice for greater boxer. For hardcore fans it seems Duran is default choice for greater boxer.

I've seen lots of debate on the trilogy between these two but not as much debate on who should be greater and, more importantly, why.

I would say that I rate them on the same tier....They were both dominant in their respective weight classes and I rate both @ # 2 ATG in those respective divisions (Only behind SRR and Benny...although for Duran I have fluctuated w/ Gans as well). While they have opposing skill sets I would say that they are again fairly level.

I do rate Duran slightly higher in the 8-12 range and SRL in the 12-20 range (It has been a while since I have compiled a revised list???), but I would still call that same tier. I might blink if I saw someone rate SRL higher (although not so much if we were to just limit this evaluation @ LW/WW with nothing else factoring in., but I wouldn't say it was an outrage, just that I don't see it the same way...

I am not a big SRL fan (although I don't really dislike him), nor of Duran (although the gap between my levels of like is very wide indeed) so perhaps even though I try and maintain an unbiased viewpoint, I could still be unfair in this regards.

Was Duran a greater lightweight than Leonard was a welterweight? Perhaps by a hair, but you could certainly argue it the other way although I would be hardpressed to agree based upon Durans victory over SRL.

Was Duran's victory over Leonard greater than Leonard's over Hagler? I would say so, only because SRL was a prime WW and Hagler while still the best MW in the world was not near his best as well as the fact that I score a clear win for Duran while Hagler nipped it on my card (not a robbery by any stretch and Marv has no one to blame but himself)

Does Duran compare to Leonard resume wise across a whole career? IMHO, YES!!!

Does Duran compare to Leonard skillwise in a peak for peak comparison? opposing skillsets for certain, but the difference would be slim either way if it truely exists at all.

Does Duran's weight hopping compare to Leonard's I think Duran did a better job in this regard, but again not by as wide of a margin as I would have said 5 years ago.

For casual fans it seems Leonard it the default choice for greater boxer. For hardcore fans it seems Duran is default choice for greater boxer. Correct, but I do not any longer believe the gulf to be as wide as I once did.

I'll wait to counter-punch something I disagree with.

I used to very first think Leonard.

Then I began to think Duran.

Now I'm reopening the debate to myself.

I'm not sure how cut and dry it is any more.

Wouldn't Duran be the obvious pick for more skilled.

Sure he got ktfo by Hearns, quit the second battle, lost against Hagler.
But then again, he was slower, less chinned (probably), smaller than Leonard.
Even without physical advantages he was at the top, and going 15 rounds against Hagler as a past lw and making it close is a big achievement.

Duran was a street fighter with brute power who could be easily beat by pure boxers. Jumping weight was a result of him eating like a pig. More than than half of his LW opponents were nobody's.
SRL did the equivalent of a Tim Bradley moving up and beating Chavez Jr in his career.
Both great but SRL has the better skill, amateur and and pro pedigree to slightly edge him in greatness imo.

I never said he wasn't skilled. He was skilled and he was a street fighter but SRL was a better technician.
