Kobayashi was a very good fighter imo, if a bit one handed. Lacked real top end durability too, though you can't blame him for the Arguello and Gomez ko's. He put in some good work in both fights before he got taken out. Did they move him too quickly into the Arguello fight, do you think? There were very few names of note on his record prior, though the unbeaten win-ko ratio looked impressive at the time, no doubt.

Have you seen him against Pedroza?

Right near the beginning of his purple patch leading to him getting a title shot against Rose. 13 fights undefeated and some quality scalps in there.

I was just looking at his record and was thinking that. He had that bad patch in 66(look how close those fights are together) and then he was off. I was curious about his second fight with Edmundo Esparza. On boxrec it says WTKO3 at 2.31 but in the fight report it says it was stopped 29 seconds before the final bell. Anyone know anything about it?

Erm, some of it once, in a manner of speaking. My mate had a career set of Pedroza, the Kobayashi fight being on it, so a few of us started watching it one night. Trouble was we were all pissed and stoned to the point of being incapable of speech or general movement. I very vaguely remember some dodgy back flashes where I thought Kobayashi maybe did well enough in the opening to mid rounds before his face got swollen around the 7th or 8th and Pedroza took over. That was about 5 or 6 years ago, so I'll have to cadge it off him and re-watch it.

Funnily enough that's what my version looks like as it starts spazzing out around the 10th round

Al, I'm not sure about the Esparza fight, more research needed. The one I know for sure is in error is the DQ over Memo Tellez. The report is correct, Castillo stopped him in 11 rounds. So add one more KO to Castillo's official record.

I've just looked at the 67 Ring record book but it doesn't even show the fight. I'll be looking further into it.
