I've been reviewing Sanchez fights just because that's what i do every couple of years. He reminds me of the football (soccer) player Andrea Pirlo. I'll just watch and say to myself "this guy's a ****ing genius".
I've also been reviewing some prime Gomez fights (thanks to Flea).
I think Sanchez would always beat Gomez at 126. But I've been wondering if Sanchez was a better Featherweight than Gomez was a Super Bantamweight. I'm not talking resume, just pure abillity.
I've noticed something watching them side by side. Gomez is spectacular with the angles he creates with footwork and sliding to put himself in punching range while getting his opponent out of punching range. He also incorporates incredible head movement when doing this. It's ****ing spectacular to watch. And he was a nasty ****er so I wondered if he was just punking guys because he could. But I see it in all of his prime fights and it appears to be his style.
Well, long story short, I think that Sanchez is more efficient with his movements. Gomez can make a guy look silly and make him miss by several inches. Sanchez will make a guy miss by just an inch or just enough so that a landed blow is not nearly flush. At the very highest levels (like against each other), Sanchez's stuff works better.
Gomez at times reminds me a bit of Duran. But like Sanchez, I think Duran is less flashy but more efficient than Gomez. Gomez also reminds me a bit of O.Canizales. And I've often wondered the same thing. Would Canizales stuff work against the very top flight competition? We never got to find that out.
Gomez also gets a little lazy with the jab. He paws it out there often as a range finder for the right hand. I wonder if a tall puncher like an Eirk Morales could make him pay for that? Anyway, I still think he's the best 122 lber I've ever seen.

Me too! Crushed him with a body shot didn't he? Got the better of Chacon twice, admittedly Chacon lost focus like Olivares at times and struggled to make 126 due to his out of ring antics, but still, 2-1 in that series blunts 0-2 against Herrera a bit.

Gomez faced much better fighters than Canizales. Look how he dissected Davila. Past his best and without the dynamic movement of his best performances he gritted it out and smashed Pintor. Zarate wasn't at a size disadvantage (they both struggled to make 122 for whatever reason) and Gomez abused him and smacked him up like he beat up his little brother.

Good points Flea. I wasn't trying to suggest Gomez's resume was nearly as thin as Canizales. I think Sanchez had attributes which could (and did)neutralize Gomez's skillset. Gets me to wondering about someone at 122, clearly Gomez's best weight, who wouldn't be punked by Gomez's exceptional movement. Maybe someone like a Miguel Lora.
It kind of illustrates Gomez's greatness at that weight because it's difficult to think who could foil him in that way.

Has anyone ever seen any footage going about of Gomez Vs Sakad/Sagat Portvanee/Petchyindee?

just watching burgos beat the **** out of martinez from the card last night. so of course, martinez gets the decision. some close rounds, not a close fight.

this is 2 in a row as i had him losing pretty clearly to beltran as well. at least that was a great fight that COULD have gone either way (if you're puerto rican).

couldn't give less of a **** what martinez does from here

Well, he actually only received the draw. Even that result was a huge gift, though. Tough to give Rocky any more than four rounds (I gave him three personally)

Smacking around Zarate didn't look awfully hard to do though. He looked as though he might have fallen over if you breathed on him a little too hard. Controversial!

Yeah right. Hence why he had a gunfight with Alfonso Zamora.

Don't rate him, breh. ...Zarate or Zamora. Olivares would have sat them both down inside 8 rounds.

**** knows how Herrera battered Olivares twice then.

And I'm sure Olivares would've battered Zamora early doors...as Zarate did.

Was Pintor not all that either? Would love to hear your scorecard on that one actually, controversial one that.

And what about Fenech, who Zarate gave a good account of himself against nearly a decade after retiring?

Herrera isn't Zarate. He was probably actually quite good.

Zamora and Zarate, yes.

There are stories about Zarate being ill in that Gomez fight and I think he hit him when he was down at one point. I couldn't believe Gomez handled him like that at the time. It was a real shock for me.
