Default Who looks more impressive: Gennady Golovkin or Sergey Kovalev?

From what I'm seeing so far both are offensive fighters with a punch along with some solid fundamentals. After seeing GGG and Kovalev's performance last Saturday who do you think looks more impressive so far?

Kovalev was very impressive this weekend against a top LHW. Golovkin impress me more with his punch variety, both stalks very well while remaining patient and calm.

They were equally impressive.

If I had to pick one though, it would be GGG. At least his opponent was ready, and able to fight, even though over matched.

Campillo looked soft, old, and unprepared. Don't know how much I can really take away from the fight, as far as really evaluating Kovalov.

Golovkin is far more proven and has been generating buzz ever since his amateur days.

Kovalev has only been known outside Russia for two years (and even then, only by a few people until last weekend) and simply doesn't have anywhere near the depth of resume Golovkin has - again, dating back to the AM's.

However, if you ask me whether it's just as likely Kovalev rules 175lbs with as iron a h2h fist as Golovkin is expected to rule 160lbs...then I'd say yes, absolutely. He looks as potentially dominant against everyone at his weight.

+1

Honestly, I might be more willing to put money on Kovalev ruling 175 than Golovkin ruling 160. Kovalev has impressed the hell out of me since I took note of him about a year ago. The guy's a monster.

Kovalev is way better than GGG.

This. You can watch Golovkin and have MINOR questions about him, but Kovalev simply has no flaws.

Matvey Korobov vs Kovalev from 2004 Nationals

Korobov had his return fight after a layoff against Nunez a couple months ago dominating him, hopefully he'll fight a contender this year and get into the MW mix himself.

I was impressed with Kovalev as well, but he has better fighters to deal with than does triple G. If triple G is as good as his fans say, he only needs to take out a declining Martinez to rule the division. Kovalev has to deal with Pascel and Dawson, not to mention the super middles who might move up.

MW is deeper and has a better overall quality of fighters than LHW does.

Can Korobov still fight at 160?

What caused his layoff?

I've seen that vid. Korobov had promise at one point, but he really fell off.

Some inconsistency in form, and inactivity.

Based on the Hopkins II and Ward performances for Dawson, and looking at Pascal against Kuziemski (even bearing the injury in mind) - Kovalev matches up very favorably against both. Otherwise, light heavy is very shallow. He easily beats Shumenov, Cleverly, White etc.

Not too many threats.

MW is actually pretty stacked, even outside the belt holders.

Golovkin would perhaps be a betting fave against most of them (and by KO) but even guy like N'Dam N'Jikam is a wild card, on a given night you could see him box his way to a decision if he could avoid getting dropped too many times.

I agree.

If they both smash their way through the best of their respective decisions, it'll be equally impressive IMO. (Golovkin having more challenging opponents, and Kovalev launching into the mix with less pro & am experience than Golovkin)
