Default Ringside

Did anyone catch this week's episode?

The show focused entirely on promoters and began with a pointed introduction from Adam Booth:

'We did invite some of Britain's leading names to join us on set and, perhaps understandably, one or two declined.'

The studio guests covered a broad spectrum of British promoters: Eddie Hearn, Dave Coldwell and Miranda Carter.

Richard Schaeffer offered a perspective from across the pond and took the opportunity to hype Anthony Ogogo and the GBP UK venture. Details on his plans remain sketchy. Hearn claimed he couldn't match GBP's offer to Ogogo.

Schaeffer name-checked David Haye, who is still listed as a GBP fighter on the company's website. I've never been clear on their role in Haye's career. Schaeffer also broached the possibility of both Adrian Broner and Danny Garcia fighting in Britain as part of GBP's push towards becoming a force in the UK.

Dave Coldwell plugged his new promotional partnership with Spencer Fearon. Both men bring something new to the British boxing scene and hopefully can develop into major players in the sport.

Eddie Hearn dismissed the growing number of fighters heading promotional companies, calling them frontmen with little involvement in their companies. He also compared his work to that of his father, mocking the credibility of some of the opponents Barry had recruited for Chris Eubank and emphasizing the growing pressure on promoters from TV companies.

I thought this was a really good episode of Ringside, which seems to have upped its game recently. But Smith's introductory comments raise concern about the future prospects for British promoters outside of Hearn working with Sky Sports and indeed with each other.

Dave Coldell's partner is Spencer Fearn not Fearon. Two different guys mate.

Eddie was utterly mesmeric as usual.

Oh right. Shame that, I liked the idea of Coldwell and Fearon teaming up.
