Skipping road work for swimming and stuff is starting to become fashionable, and it can work. Juan Diaz, a recent fighter with an unbelievable gas tank(Possibly the best work horse fighter of the past 10 years), did swimming and some stairs and rope, and that was pretty much it, and he had the best gas tank in the sport. |

Also Wladimir does swimming now and he doesn't seem to gas anymore. (A 245 pound man can't run without hurting his knees anyway) A treadmill is probably better for your knees too.(Because of shork absorbment) Though running on a treadmill is easier than normal running (less air friction) so you either have to run at a higher pace or longer. Treadmills with even more shock absorbment are even better for your knees. |

it used to bore me but after doing it for 2 weeks or so you get used to it. Its time i use to reflect on life and think about stuff.
I'm far from an expert on boxing but i think they where scrawnier back then because they focused on endurance. They used to go for 15 rounds, you need to be in tip top shape, so time would obviously of been better spent on endurance. I agree with the old school approach of training, its more of what i'm in to (i don't box but my routine for working out is modeled after). Plus a lot of them did hard labor back then, it gets you strong as hell ( i do it) but it burns a lot of calories and back then they didn't have cinnabuns with 600 calories in them, they ate an apple instead. |

my coach is excatly like this will tell you you wanta be muscular, run, dont lift weights you have no fast twich muscles because you lift weights saw a video on running related injuries and had a blank look and just said you have to run a doctor who sometimes told him, that weights are good for reparing injuries and he said, no their not lol but then it comes to actual boxing this old man is a wizard |

i think the problem with training "old school" is that its good until you get an injury then your fucked, cause they have no answers for that and will just re-injured but the endurance thing i can see what you mean but on the other hand some of them look kinda flabby too, so thats hard to answer |

Monday-600 stomach crunches all different angles, hammer strength bench press,high-back rows and pull-ups with weights held between his feet all done as a super-set. Then tricep dips, dumbbell hang-cleans and reverse bicep-curls. Finish with 100 pushups. Then Juan spends a hour and half on the rotating stairmaster machine. Then he swims for a mile in a half which last about 45 minutes. Tuesday-5 minute warmup, abdominal, neck and hip work. 3 rounds of shadow-boxing,12-15 rounds of bag, pad, jump rope and sparring. Day ends with 5 mile stairmaster session. Wednesday-50 standard pushups,10 reps of each plyometric push-ups,wude-stance pushups and hip-elevated pushups. Minute and half rest then repeat that routine then rest and repeat agian. 3 sets up pullups until failure followed by 3 sets up hyperextension back exercises. Mile and half swimming in the pool. Thursday-5 minute warmup, abdominal, neck, hip work. 3 rounds of shadowboxing,12-15 rounds of bag, pad, jump rope and sparring. 5 miles on the stairmaster. Friday-3 sets of split-stance lunges while holding 40 pound dumbbells,Juan then does 3 sets of dumbbell deadlifts adding a calf raise into each rep. Sit and Squat where Juan stands next to a bench holding 40 pound dumbbells and do squats until hes in a seated postion before going back up. Finishes workout with 2 sets of seated leg pressed with 400 pounds. 1 1/2 hour swim. Saturday-5 minute warmup, abdominal, neck, hip work.3 rounds of shadow boxing,12-15 rounds of bag, pad, jump rope and sparring. 5 miles of stairmaster machine. This is written from a catalog by a past poster, but I have the magazine. And it is, quite possibly, one of the better boxing workouts ever devised. I've done something similar, and it worked great. |

Weights can prevent injuries, they can also cause injuries too (ever seen a nude with a ripped peck muscle? aint pretty)..running can cause injuries, it can also make your lungs and legs stronger stronger...they all have positive and negative points and its about being intelligence in how you apply each. |
