Default Remembering Wilfredo Gomez .Vs. Lupe Pintor

Could this great war been the finest victory of Gomez' career? Both fighters had questions going in. Gomez after the terrible loss to Sanchez & Pintor with the "Win" against Zarate. But both fighters gave thier all in a see saw battle. That looked like Pintor was starting to take over & Gomez came back in the fourteenth round to stop Pintor.

I remember it well......I thought Pintor was going to win.....then
Gomez got that big punch in and knocked him out.

Another free CBS Sports Spectacular (or similar show) classic.

................Amazing bout, and a terrific contrast in mentality, if not style.

There was Gomez, all fire and attack, emotion as much a weapon as his right hand. Then we had Pintor, cooler and more studied. I remember after the sixth round, when Gomez landed as many elbows on the follow through as legitimate punches, Pintor showed his experience and businesslike approach by calmly motioning to the ref at the bell to watch for those fouls.

It was incredible to see how Pintor ate shot after hard shot and show no ill effects whatsoever, while Gomez puffed up like a blowfish, his face a gruesome mask by the tenth.

Then, in the 14th, a seemingly innocuous right hand landed for Gomez, and it was all but over. Losing momentum in shades over the past few rounds, Gomez ended it conclusively.

I remember reading the words of Gomez's manager before the fight that I had read in an article about it later........."when he was younger, he could box and move and not get hit. But his mind is criminal. Now his attitude is, 'you hit me, now I'm going to break your neck.' "

Something along those lines.

Gomez showed he was a warrior, not of the previous booty kind.

I remember thinking as Lupe went down that the bombs he had withstood during his career had finally caught up to him. A year earlier I think he would have stayed up.
