How good was this man? I've been watching boxing for a long time but never really got into him, can anyone give me a 101 on The Hawk?

I wouldn't call him weak chinned, but yeah, he could be hurt. Placed his shots very well, maybe the freakiest P4P puncher in boxing history.

Not a great, but not that far off.

His boxing skills were average, but he made up for it with raw punching power.
2 division weight champion
Best wins: Graham, Norris

There was a planned fight with Toney, but HBO killed it.

Interesting fact; JJ never beat a reigning champion, all the titles he won were vacant.

His 2 round fight with McCallum is one of my favourite short fights.

Personally I think the ref should of let the fight carry on

I don't think Jackson's resume was strong enough for him to make the hof

Maybe on top level average but he had very good skills just not elite...

Agreed, but the performances & stunning finishes probably were. His punches made people go down like they'd been struck by lightning.

Even more off topic. The US virgin islands (population 100,00) has produced 3 greats, Peter Jackson, Emile Griffith & Julian Jackson.

Peter Jackson is one of the greatest heavyweights of the late 19th century.

Emile Griffith is a former welter & middleweight world champion from the 60s & 70s, he is perhaps most famous for his tragic fight with Benny Paret.

Twice. Lost by TKO14 in 1971 & by UD over 15 in 1973.

He was past his best by then, he had the biggest shoulders Ive ever seen on a welterweight.

it's scary how massive he looks in comparison to the other guys he faces. also never touched a weight. his friend said he was exactly like that when he was a 15year old clothes porter. on the outside you dont notice but then when they bump together he sort of envelops them.

anyways. yeah way passed his best by monzon. have you seen the alan minter footage.
