Default Charles Kid McCoy - Underrated ?

He is certainly forgotten here....I think since I joined the forum I´ve never seen a thread on him IIRC....

He deserves more discussion....

Let´s talk about the guy.

He is definitely under rated today.

He stands out as one of the best pound for pound fighters of that era.

I was literally considering making this exact same thread!

I think he is underrated these days. I don't care how crazy he was -- his résumé is amazing.

Possibly. I cant say i know enough about him to make an educated judgement. I can say that when spoken about as a MW, countless times i have seen him referred to as an extremely weak champion in a very good era

He was highly rated in his day, and for decades afterwards. But like most fighters of that era he is often overlooked now.
Tommy Ryan, to some extent, and Jack McAuliffe don't quite get the credit their achievements deserve either.
Or the original Jack Dempsey who came before them.

Very under rated guy. Somewhat like Corbett in terms of mobility and ability. He had a punch called a cork screw that created cuts. McCoy would rotate his thumb downward upon impact to his opponents face and twist his glove into them. The gloves those days were made from horse hair. To say the gloves of the times were easily nicked up and were not always smooth accurate. McCoy was the barber of the times.

Ring Magazine listed McCoy as part of their 100 best punchers of all time, which of course was done in a pound for pound sense.

McCoy allegedly once threw tacks into the ring on a bare footed opponent! Other stories say he would tell a man his shoe laces were untied, then nail them. At times he would fake an injury or illness prior to a bout ( As he did with Ryan ) to be underestimated by his opponent. I would love to see film of him in his prime. It might be out there.

pretending he was sick was what made the term 'the real mccoy' part of everyday english language

McCoy is, in my opinion, the most underrated fighter of all time. He brought a lot of this on himself with his "shady" fights. He might have been a better Welterweight than Ryan-himself so underrated-he was easily the best middle until Ketchell and he competed well with the top Heavyweights of the time. He was very fast, skilled, shifty and hit very hard. He was a mite chinny I think and for me the Root fight is the one that knocks him from been one of the greatest L/heavies of all time.
BTW he is alleged to have spread a rumor that Peter Maher's wife had died just prior to their fight! (Peter's wife had lost their first child a few days before the fight in childbirth and was herself seriously ill)

That is actually urban legend. Its common usage predates him.

"McCoy" is definitely underrated, though. A name few today know, although in his day a pretty big name and was among the more colorful personalities and talented boxers (although a filthy cheating bastard ) of the century.
