Jack Johnson has a low quantity of fights relative to other black HW's of his era.
Sanchez, Villa, and Ketchell all died before 25. These guys established themselves as legends in their brief stay. Imagine what they would have gone on to do... Guys like Leonard, Whitaker, Oscar, and Mayweather don't have the quantity of fights of some of their contemporaries or greats who came before. James J. Jeffries has a very low quantity of fights relative to ATG HW's who would proceed him. Jack Johnson has a low number of fights compared to his era's greats in Langford, Wills, McVea, Jeannette, Wills, etc. |

Jeff Fenech only fought 32 times before making the hall of fame (and once after).
Michael Spinks only fought 32 times as well. I wouldn't call him an ATG, but Saensak Muangsurin accomplished more in 20 fights (realy, all of the accomplishment came in his first 15) than most guys do their entire careers. He was already 10-1 in title fights 14 into his career, before losing 5 of his last 6. Similarly, Yuri Arbachakov only fought 24 times over the course of 7 years, but managed 9 title defenses while taking all comers. |
