Pacquiao pummels Russian spar mate

BAGUIO CITY: Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao gave Russian Ruslan Provodnikov a taste of heavy pummelling in the opening round of their second day of sparring in Baguio City.

In the first of four rounds, the face of the Russian junior welterweight prospect looked red and misshapen because of Pacquiao’s hard punches.

Marvin Somodio, who replaced Alex Ariza as Pacquiao’s conditioning coach saw that an injury was imminent after assistant trainer and nutritionist Nonoy Neri noticed that Provodnikov’s headgear was loose.

Chief trainer Freddie Roach ordered a change in Provodnikov’s headgear to protect the Russian from Pacquiao’s powerful left and right combinations.

A member of Team Pacquiao, Rodel Mayol, willingly lent his $250-worth headgear to the Russian. He will use this in the next four days of the Pambansang Kamao’s high-altitude training.

Roach said they would not replace Provodnikov, who, he admitted is the ideal sparring mate for the PacMan. The change of headgear was just to ensure that no one suffer serious injury so that the remaining days of the Baguio camp would proceed uninterrupted.

Provodnikov, whose fighting style is similar to that of Timothy Bradley whom Pacquiao will fight on June 9, in Las Vegas, will be retained as the Filipino ring icon’s sparring mate along with two other boxers when the team fly to Roach’s Wild Card Gym in the Los Angeles, California
