Clancy was an excellent trainer, and even if you didnt hear much about him, and was able to listen to his commentary on HBO and ABC he was very knowledgeable and knew his stuff. He seemed to always know what traps the opponents were trying to set on each other. I thoroughly enjoyed his commentary particularly because I am always interested in the technical aspect of boxing.

A great trainer who seems to get lost amid the big names such as Eddie Futch, George Benton, Manny Steward, etc. Clancy really knew his stuff. May he rest in peace.

You mean greatness SJS ? I must admit i know the name....yet little.......and wasnt there other Glancys ? Anyways.......genuine here and just wondering. Funny you mentioned the Leonard book........am just reading it at the moment.....and i know he dropped a bomb with regards to a trainer being......far more than a trainer so to speak. Unsure if its contained within this book.........am at the stage/page that he talks of his mama being unimpressed at his bird having his boy. Anyways.... |

Gil Clancy taught Emile griffith from day one. That makes him a great trainer: he had one of the really, really good ones from the "put your hands here and your feet here" to the Hall of Fame. That is the measure of a trainer.
On the other hand, both he and Emmanuel steward should hang their heads in shame over how they fucked up the work Jesus Rivero was doing with DeLaHoya. |

I use to honestly really love when Foreman didnt comment...lol..not because i minded George, but just because it was great to have Clauncy commenting. I was really hoping Manny Steward would be like that..but he was a bit too political and played the "HBO game" too much....
Teddy Atlas is ok..but such an asshole.... |
