Your right, it's hard to claim Kostya as an Australian boxer. Fair enough he fought out of here as a pro but it was the Russian boxing school that produced him technically and mentally as a top athlete, it would be a hard case to argue that his boxing skill came from Johnny Lewis' training. Kostya probably could of trained with just about any trainer in Australia and got the same results.

For Australian born fighters it looks like Jeff Fenech fought the most world champions >>>

1. Azumah Nelson
2. Phillip Holiday
3. Calvin Grove
4. Marcos Villasana
6. Carlos Zarate
7. Victor Callejas
8. Greg Richardson
9. Samart Payakaroon
10. Daniel Zaragoza

Fenech also fought Mario Martinez who won an IBO title.

Exactly my point. What is interesting is how Kostya's fighting style changed tremendously in his Pro career. In the Ams, he was really fast, with great movement and power, an extremely proficient boxer in all sense of the word. He slowed down in the Pros which is understandable, and his style adjusted to suit.

The thread says who fought the most champions not who is Australia's greatest fighter, just pointing out the facts that are related to the topic at hand...

So, was the answer Fenech or Mundine...

I'm reading two different posters asserting different answers...do we have a consensus?

Of the Australian born fighters, the answer could be the same for each question anyway - Jeff Fenech.

I can't think of an Australian born fighter who would have fought more world champions than Fenech did, and if he isn't the greatest fighter we have ever produced he is probably second behind Lionel Rose.

I rate Fenech as our greatest Oz fighter...........can't stand him as a person but as fighter he was a pure animal.

Fenech had 10, and his opponents were all WBA, WBC or IBF champions

Mundine had 6, and a couple of extremely questionable ones in McKart (WBF/WBO/IBA) & Taylor (WBF).

Aussie born or raised i think is the qualification.

I think we should cut it off at the age of 18yrs and over coming to Australia don't count

I disagree...I think those of Australian (which logically includes Aboriginals) background should only be considered..

That would have the effect of disqualifying Fenech from this thread as his backround is not Australian, Fenech is obviously a Maltese name for a man of Maltese background, shit he doesn't even look Australian but Maltese or some Italian type of ethnic... irrespective of his Australian 'citizenship'.

Obviously Les Darcy, Lionel Rose, T. Mundine, Hec Thompson, Ellis all qualify, but Darchiniyian (Armenian), Tzsyu (Russian), Ndou (South African), Fenech (Maltese), Mattioli (italian), Meehan (Kiwi/Islander), all the various lebo's (Hussein's, Hamden etc) and Bugner (Hungarian) don't.

Aussie Joe was only about 45 when he became a true blue Aussie.

Fenech was born here and represented Australia at the Olympics, so why wouldn't he be Australian? Hussein also fought at the Olympics for Australia and was born here.

Pretty sure Ellis was born in England, your criteria for Australian fighters is questionable, it is a multi-cultural society and our nation was founded on immigration, everyone who has come in the last 225 years doesn't look like a 'real' Australian.
