Hey everyone, new guy here to the boxing world. Been interested in boxing as of late and finally got into a gym for the first time. I have hired a personal trainer to help me and just completed my first 2 sessions.
This thread will be dedicated to my journey:
First day was pretty simple stuff. Practiced the whole hour and a half doing my footwork. Stepping in lead foot, shuffling rear foot in. Stepping in lead foot, shuffling rear foot in. It was a bit awkward because I have an unorthodox stance and feel more comfortable leading in with my right foot and even though I am left handed, I am right handed dominant
So I have to learn to lead with my left and get comfortable. I have practiced my foot work when I am not in the gym and have gotten a bit better. I have picked up on that the feet need to be shoulder width apart and knees have to be bent above and not over the toes.
The only problem I am having is that my feet need to stop coming in together and stay that shoulder distance.
My second day went better. Showed off my foot work and have gotten better. I shadow boxed for the first time as well as bag work. As mentioned as before it feels awkward leading with my left and when working around bag and by myself. I couldn't maneuver around as well as I could. I kept tripping over myself as well, but maybe they are my shoes? They are basketball shoes and probably not the best to shuffle around with. I showed off my conditioning to my trainer and so as long as I keep on doing what I am doing away from the gym (Workout and Diet wise) I only have to worry about technique.
I have a personal issue and that issue is gloves. On my right hand, I kept getting a stubbed thumb which made me pull back my punches a bit. Didn't make the trainer happy with that. Found out I had to forcefully bury my thumb into the stitching of the glove but had to purposely do it and didn't feel as natural as it was on my left hand.
Does anyone else have this problem and can anyone recommend me some gloves that has the thumb a bit more back away from the knuckles of the glove?
Does anyone have any advice for novices? What are some good ideas I should be wondering about as I move forward?
Will Update progress as I continue to train. Next Gym day is on 10/25
