Default Best amateur boxers..

That never made it in the pro game?

Any stories of promising, medal winning amateurs that either turned over and 'failed' or didn't even turn pro?

I know obviously this is the case for a lot of Cubans but I'm wondering about British boxers.

Probably a lesser known one and not by any means an Olympic star or that, but Stephen 'Block' Reynolds was a good Irish amateur, was ranked higher than David Haye at one point & think he won 4 or 5 national titles etc.

Lou Duva tried to turn him pro when he was at his amateur peak but he never did, now he's 39 and giving it a go.

Not saying he would have took the world by storm as I don't think he would have, but he was talented & could have been in a good few domestic dust ups.

Muhammad Abdullaev won Olympic Gold beat Cotto in the amateurs and World championships gold.

Went 21-4 which isn't bad but didn't have the success at world level like he did in the amateurs.

Also lost to Cotto in a pro fight.

Dundee's Dick McTaggart never turned pro and he's one of the best ams ever.

McTaggart won 610 of his 634 amateur fights. He was 5 times ABA champ (3 at lightweight and 2 at light welter) He was the first British boxer to compete in three Olympic Games (1956, 1960, 1964). In 1956, McTaggart won the gold medal for the lightweight division in the Olympic Games at Melbourne. He was also awarded the Val Barker Trophy for the most stylish boxer at the games and in 1960, he won an Olympic bronze medal in Rome.

Olympic gold medal, lightweight, 1956
Olympic bronze medal, lightweight, 1960
British Commonwealth champion, 1958
British Empire silver medal, 1963
European champion, 1961

The only major event he never won was the world amateur championship, only because the tournament wasn't born until 1974.

Dick was the old guy handing the medals to the Scots gold medal winners at the games yesterday.

I read that he didn't turn pro because he wasn't dedicated enough, he knew the work the pro's had to do was much harder. He jokingly said he liked his fish and chips too much. There's a doc on McTaggart on youtube [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
