Default Add another name to the welterweight mix!

From fightnews.

Former world champion Ike "Bazooka" Quartey (37-4-1, 31 KOs) is ready to start fighting again and is prepared to take on all comers. While he is busy preparing for the opening of his new hospital in Accra, he has already begun intense training back at home in preparation for his next battle. The 37-year-old ex-WBA welterweight titlist who returned from nearly a five-year retirement in 2005, will be moving back down to the 147 pound weight class after losing a decision at middleweight against Winky Wright, who has actually gone up in weight to 170 for his next fight. "Fighting at welter will allow me to polish my defense and have a much more explosive offense in the ring," said Quartey. "I'm joining Mosley and Oscar in moving down and I will be a factor in the welterweight division." He is looking to be back in the ring in September or October.

He's probably even less likely to make 147 than Oscar is.

No way Ike makes 147 he has just as good of chance as Mayorga does. I'd like too see him stay at 154 I think he can make some noise there.

Tell him to stop beating his female first.

I have to say despite what I said earlier I am excited for him coming back at 147. If Mayorga, De La Hoya and Quartey can all make the weight limit then the Welterweight division will be the best division I've ever seen in boxing.

Who would you take over Ike at 147?

Well, Ike's a welterweight right? He learned from the best?

Sugar Ray Robinson
Sugar Ray Leonard
The current WW champ, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Let's hope he doesn't go to MW and try to be like Carlos Monzon and Jake LaMotta. Maybe he'll just try to be like Marvin Hagler and throw things at cars.

Hmm, what's he got left you think?

By the way, I checked into Linares, he's not very good at all, slow, predictable and hittable, should be an easy Larios shutout.

If Ike's got a good bit left, then I'd take him over several. However, I pick Cintron over Ike if Ike is nearing the end, by KO no less, I think Cintron may have a good bit of potential after last week.

I know you dislike this one, but Cotto over Ike as well, decision.

Yeah, but Ray Robinson was a crazy person, Leonard was a coke head.

At least both don't rape little girls like Oscar, even though Oscar is a little girl himself.

I really don't think Floyd's a wife beater, I think the bitch he was with was just an exploiter.

He looked very good against Forrest especially when you consider that he was 5" shorter. Vernon didn't have his left arm at 100% for that fight so his jab was all but non-existant. He hasn't taken many beatings in his career so he's a very young 37. He didn't give his best effort in his last comeback run especially weighing in at 160. To me Ike is a guy stuck in between division. 150 or so seems like his best weight. 147 will be so difficult to make it will most likely resort him to draining the last few pounds off. I think he can make the weight if he's 100% dedicated. The most promising thing to me as a Quartey fan is his superb chance at redemption not only against De La Hoya but more importantly with his career. The Welterweight picture is perfect for him if he can get anyone to fight him.

Paul Williams would give him a lot of trouble, but excluding him Quartey matches up well with everyone in the division. I can't see Cotto giving him any real trouble. Ike's jab would pound Miguel to death and it would be very difficult for Cotto to back Ike up. Cotto doesn't have the type of hook that has notoriously given Ike trouble in his career. Either way, I don't think that fight would go to decision.

Cintron's style could give Ike trouble, but I still dont think Cintron has the mindset to defeat Ike especially if Ike has proven himself again as a welterweight before their fight takes place.

He has not been the least bit impressive since returning to the ring. I'll add his name to the mix when he shows that he belongs there at this point of his career.
