Default Bruised Knuckles -- Anyone?

About two weeks ago I hurt the middle knuckle of my right hand away from boxing, I got angry about something silly and ended up acting sillier by punching a wall. There was some minor swelling at first but that has since gone, and there is only some minor discoloration.

Now, two weeks later, when I try and punch the heavy bag the pain is still sharp enough to motivate me to stop using that hand. The bruise is still there and it feels like my hand is striking the bruise and mashing it underneath the skin. Also just to give more info.. unless I punch and connect to something with the hand, the knuckle doesn't bother me at all.

All in all a very annoying injury. I have full use of my hand and it feels fine, good enough to frequently put on the gloves and test it. When I poke and prod there is just some mild soreness/tenderness, but when I hit the heavy bag, it feels like I'm doing solid damage to something not even close to healed yet.

Obviously I don't want to prolong this so I know I am just going to have to continue to stop using it.

Anyone have an idea on how long this type of thing takes to heal?

Also any advice on how to help it heal faster?

I was figuring I'd be good to go by now.

Thanks in advance.

The healing process depends on how much you punch with your hand. It's best just to not use it for a little while. You can still shadowbox, punch light on mitts and maybe some sparring.

I would recommend you to buy an ointment (?) called Orudis. Don't know if they sell the same ointment in other countries, but it's made to be painkilling and to make the swelling go away. You massage it onto the knuckle up to three times a day. It's been working very good for me.

You should also buy a seating pad (like the one I post below), and cut out some pieces and tape them together. You lay them only on the knuckles which are fine, not the middle finger, and then you use bandages or gauze on top of that. That will help to get the pressure away from the bad knuckle.

boil water and get a rag and do some heat compresses...i never fully recovered from whatever it is that happened to my knuckle for hitting a wall two years ago on christmas =\....buuuuuut my right middle knuckle is huge compared to the rest of either hand..its kinda discolored and it has a click whenever i wiggle it with my other hand. The cold weather makes it hurt....but i rarley ever feel pain in it anymore from boxing.

Sharp pain is NOT a bruise. Its indicative of a fracture. You need to stop hitting with the broken hand before you cause permanent damage to the knuckle.

Immediate treatment submerge in ice water. Long term [see above]. You can actually massage the bruised area collaterally (this will spread out the obstructing blood clot allowing the tissue to heal faster).

Perfect time for weight training,

shadow box with weights instead of heavy bag for the moment

That happened to me from punching the wall at work. It'd get better, then I'd press my luck and do combinations against the well, which was bad. Then it got worse again, and didn't get better for months. I was sure I'd fractured it. Eventually it healed. I don't box tho', so best of luck to ya. Definitely give the ****er some time off. No need to press the issue and damage the hand.
