Default Latin Welterweight Tourney: Rd 2: Results

Miami, Florida is the site for this second round of the Latin Welterweight Tourney. The Orange Bowl is packed as three of the remaining participants are Cuban fighters. In the opening bout Luis Rodriguez shows great skill in establishing his size advantage & boxing ability against the game Carlos Ortiz. Ortiz presses the attack, but finds himself outmuscled on the inside by Luis. Rodriguez has the strong jab going & is able to keep Ortiz at bay. Carlos is able to move in on occasion & deliver some shots to the body. Luis is moving well though & controls the fight in the later stages.

LUIS RODRIGUEZ . 15 DEC. CARLOS ORTIZ

The main event has the stadium in a madhouse, the fans don't know which way to go. The flamboyant "Cuban Hawk" comes out fast & delivers "bolo" punches to excite the crowd. Napoles is calm & looking for his openings. By the mid rounds Napoles comes on and makes the fight very close. Gavilan delivers some hard punches in the eighth, cutting Napoles' left eye. Gavilan presses the advantage & appears to be leading after the 12th round. Napoles accelerates his attack & wins the 13th & 14th rounds. The last round has both fighters punching nonstop. Napoles' heavier blows are showing an effect on Gavilan. Gavilan is stunned by a right hand & "Montaquilla" closes with a flurry of punches!
