Default Buying gear through Argos..

Just thinking about buying pads, gloves and a bag.

Is it worth buying through Argos, or just through a proper boxing store?

Argos are decent for delivering mate.
But i would suggest going in your local sports equipment shop, looking at your options first hand and if you like them, offer less than the asking price.
Seriously even shops are prepared to haggle since the credit crunch.
I felt embarassed haggling in Liverpool(it was a lighting shop ha) but my birds dad made me. I went in a carpet shop. He give the fella measurements. Come to 700. He paid 450 by standing there shaking his head talking about hard times ha. Yes i did chat shit

Boxing equipment is no different to buying a guitar IMO. It's the sort of thing you have to try out for yourself and see what is comfortable for you.

Different people like different gloves, some have more padding than others. It's important they feel comfortable and you probably want 16oz to protect your hands.

You want a fairly heavy bag that isn't going to move TOO much.

Go to a more specialized shop.

Yeah depends on what it is that your getting really. Trying them on wont really matter to be honest though. You can try a glove on for a few seconds and all gloves of today will feel comfortable. It's only when you punch with them for a few days you'll be able to tell whether they're right or not (by which time you wont be able to take them back either)

Best advice I can offer is to make sure your getting a boxing pair (none of these martial arts/boxing ones and i'd just generally stick to you bigger named ones ie, Everlast, Adidas, Reebok, BBE, ProBox or maybe Reyes/Winning if you have the money.

I would steer clear of Lonsdale as they are shite and you can only buy the PU ones for a decent price, which brings me to my last point.....Don't buy PU ones. Always make sure they are leather (if you can afford). PU is utter rubbish and stick to the bag and rip after minutes.

I would go into a shop and have a good look at what's on offer and buy a few bits... Don't nail your colours to the mast with how much you want to spend... Try and go for a deal where you buy some kit and get something else at 50% or 2 4 1...

I agree with other posts, there are so many to choose from and everyone is different... Reyes are fantastic, but come at a price...

To start with go for some Reebok 14-16oz for the bag. I would get a pair of 10oz for the pads as you can feel your shot and it will give you a better idea of what a glove you will where in a contest feels like should you decide to pursue boxing.

Make sure that you get the best protection for your hands, that is so important, you can buy herring bone wraps at a cost. Go to the chemist or somewhere you can buy crepe bandages, get some tape and some sanitary towels.... MOST IMPORTANT with wraps, make sure you can find someone to show you how to put them on correctly.

I hope you get what you want at a good price. Good luck and enjoy...

Online boxing stores are great, local boxing stores a rip-off.

If you go to a boxing gym ask your coach where he gets his supplies and ask if he has a catalogue. My coach gets discounts too, it's all good professional quality and he will order me bags, gloves anything I want.
