Chavez probably wouldn't have had time to land another punch. The fight, for all intents and purposes, was over when Steele stopped it. Just a sad end to a classic bout.

I usually agree with "premature" stoppages, because even if the fighter is perfectly capable of continuing, the ref only stops it when they are being systematically beaten up with no realistic chance of turning it around (Calzaghe-Manfredo and Roy Jones-Clinton Woods).

I suppose a rough stoppage would be Leonard-Benitez. Even though Benitez had no chance of winning, I think a warrior would have wanted to see that one through to the bell, I bet he felt disappointed inside. He was being beaten, but he was not being seriously hurt or embarrassed I don't think.

Agreed i have felt the benitez - leonard fight was always stopped early.

I felt Chacon v Mancini was a good stoppage, imo he was fighting a younger and bigger opponent and was not showing anything back

Ali stunned him with a good right hand but Lyle covered up and appeared to have weathered the storm as Ali looked to have punched himself out(mostly on Rons gloves) when the referee stopped it.Lyle should've punched back but he was still capable of protecting himself and should have been given more time to recover,especially since he was winning.

Ali himself arguably copped worse in round 11 of the FOTC but got given every chance to recover.

One rule for Ali and another set for everyone else it seems...

Fullmer-Basilio 2nd fight. Although Fullmer was winning the fight and Carmen probably would have lost the decision, I thought that the referee jumped in too soon. So did Carmen. But I think that Basilio could have finished that fight and probably their first one as well. Carmen sure gave Giacoma hell for stopping the 2nd fight.

It may not quite fit in here, but I watched Dempsey Willard the other day and that was a horrible decision not to stop that fight earlier. Willard really was totally defenceless for a while there. I know the rules pretty much stopped a ref from calling the fight off, but Willard was very lucky not to get hurt a lot worse.
