Default If you choose to do weights, please don't do this!

Now I'm not claiming to be any kind of expert here. I do, however enjoy reading about body mechanics and such, especially to do with sports training in general.

Anyway, I just wanted to say to anyone who does weights to please NOT do punches with excessive weights. Some slightly weighted gloves are good, but for the love of God don't grab a 10kg dumbbell and start throwing jabs and straight rights with it You're doing nothing to help your cause and will most likely **** up your punching technique by ruining the natural mechanics. The whole point of weight-training is to improve the strength and power of your muscles so that any punches you do throw with that great technique will be stronger.

Just some friendly advice borne out of seeing this day after day at my gym

Punching with weights, no. Throwing weights in a punch like motion, yes.

This is very true. You should never exceed 5lbs in weight during punching exercises, you can injure your self and screw up your technique.

I heard that can **** up your joints as well.. Elbows and Shoulders.

I always thought 16 oz. gloves are all the weight you need..

Normally if you do sprint punching or shadow boxing with weights you use 2.5lb weights, that normally isn't enough to cause any damage. Once you get into the 5lbs, you'll be ok with the first minute or so of the round, but after that you start risking injury in the joints, particually the elbow and shoulders.
