Ron Richards Monument.

Nearly 100 years has passed since the birth of one of Australia's greatest ever fighters. Ron Richards was born on May 8th 1910, and to commemorate the centennary of the Great mans birth a Monument is being unveiled at the Purga Mission on the Ipswich outskirts.

When Leon gets his PC active again, he'll be so kind as to place the advertisement on this thread.

All local to the Brisbane area should definately consider attending and honouring this Aussie boxing legend. Few were any better, ever.

Why did he not defend any of his aussie titles from MW to HW....am I missing something?

Dec 21. 1936. Richards wins M/W Crown. KO 10 Fred Henneberry.

Nov. 23. 1937. Richards defends M/W Crown. KO 5 Jack Mc Namee.

Dec. 16. 1937. Richards defends M/W Crown. W/F 12 Fred Henneberry.

Much like Elley Bennett when he was the Bantam Champ, most attention was payed to foreign fighters and belting the life out of them. Doors would usually open for a GREAT fighter as Australian/Commonwealth Champion. In most cases Richards would be entertaining the Sydney Stadium mobs by belting the top rated LH/Ws into stupidity.

I see he won the title but cant see the other fights you mentioned

I do see he won the HW aussie title in 1937 in october

He was also 3x Aust M/W Champion... Stop looking on boxrec.. it's far from complete.

Shhh!! They might hear you. Lionel's statue is due to be unveiled the week following RR's monument.. Better to focus on this one here first and get the mobs in QLD to attend. Lionel will draw a great crowd.
