Default how to work the speed bag

Sorry, this is a very basic question.

What is the proper way to work the speed bag? I generally hit it first in a regular punching fashion (meaning with the front of my fist) and then come back with the side of my fist on the same hand. Then do the same thing with the other hand, and back. I think I read to do this on the internet when starting out boxing.

Most everyone I see at the gym just hits it exclusively with the side of their fists. You can certainly do it faster that way, but is it more beneficial to do the way I described?

Thanks in advance...

I usually do the standard 1-2-3 rhythm hitting from the front. I'm trying to do more hitting from the rear and the sides now that I've gotten good though.
