Unbeaten WBO Female lightweight world champion Erin McGowan (14-0, 7 KOs) talks about becoming Australia’s first female world champion and much more:

Q - Erin, first of all congratulations. How does it feel to be Australia’s first WBO female world boxing champion?

I’m still having overwhelming feelings at the moment, I am very very happy and privileged to hold this title

Q - Your title belt is Pink, its looks fantastic, but has it finally sunk in that you are the champion?

I think some days it’s still sinking in, every day I look at my belt…my belt is absolutely beautiful, I am very proud of it!

Q - You had a comfortable victory on points over the UK’s Lindsay Scragg … did you always feel in control of the fight?

Yes, I knew coming into this fight that it was going to be the toughest fight of my career, I just think my training camp and the game plan we came up with worked perfectly on the night, although I did have a bit of a tough time in Round two, a very very close round, but I still never got too worried, I still knew I was in control of the fight.

Q - How did you get into the sport of boxing?

I started boxing for fitness, I was taking a break from competitive netball abd basketball and wanted to keep fit and healthy and boxing was a great way to do that.

Q - Who was or is your favorite fighter to watch?

Kostya Tszyu, I loved his speed timing and skill as a boxer

Q - Who do you plan on defending your title against… when and where?

We are in negotiations at the moment, so nothing is set in stone, but we are looking at a girl from the USA …My manager and trainer are having a good look at all that at the moment, but we are hoping to bring my first title defense back to Perth.

Q - Do you want to fight in the USA?

Yes, definitely I want to eventually fight there, but I want to bring my first defense back to Perth, I would love to have two more fights in Australia before heading overseas.

Q - You were at the Danny Green vs Paul Briggs fight, what did you think as you saw everything unfold?

That was a really upsetting fight for a lot of people, I was in shock as I really didn’t expect it to be over so quick…maybe Paul should not have been there in the first place, I don’t know?

Q - How has Billy Hussein been as a trainer for you?

Absolutely brilliant, in the 8 week camp leading up to my title fight I improved ten-fold as a boxer, I have worked with a lot of trainers around the world as an amateur and professional boxer, and everything he showed me made more sense and I picked things up really well.

Q - Billy has been in the news over the Paul Briggs vs Danny Green findings, what were your thoughts when you heard the ruling?

I was really surprised when I heard and I know Billy will be appealing the decision.

Q - We hear that you are friends with both Danny Green and BJ Flores, so what was your thoughts on their recent IBO world cruiserweight title fight at Challenge stadium?

It was a tough great fight, it was good for Danny’s career as BJ was a hard-hitting worthy opponent and the fight is what Perth really needed.

Q - Erin, at 29 years of age you are a champion, how many years do you intend on fighting for?

I always said I wanted to be done with my boxing by the age 30, but now that that is creeping up so quickly, probably 33 or 34 I’d like to be finished by.

Q - Do you plan on moving up or down in weight and going for more titles?

Yes, further down the track if I am going to be going for more titles I will definitely move down in weight.
