Default Best of 2010 fights

...worth a read on a quiet day:

Best of 2010: fights

by Luke Holmesby & Matt Price - Big Pond Sport - Dec 30th 2010

Danny Green v Paul Briggs
It was another big year for boxing, and unfortunately once again often not for the right reasons. More than a few eyebrows were raised in July when Green's much-hyped match-up with Briggs was all over and done with after half a minute.

Green initially blasted Briggs for dropping quicker than a coin off a tall building before doing a 180 and suggesting that maybe he did hit him in the sweet spot and his early exit was genuine. Green's fresh new viewpoint didn't exactly do much to alter public opinion and the bout was written off as just another farce.

Anthony Mundine v Garth Wood
Popular public opinion was also a significant factor in the other big Australian fight of the year, the surprise defeat of Mundine by Wood.

Making it all the more embarrassing for 'The Man' was Wood's oft-repeated title of reality TV star, as if Mundine was going toe to toe with Anthony Callea. In actual fact, Wood had won the latest series of boxing show The Contender and proved to be all that and more.

Wood, like Mundine, had a rugby league background, having played for NRL teams West Tigers and South Sydney, and his win came in the fifth round at Acer Arena.

It was a victory not just for Wood and not just for TV's most credibility-challenged genre, but also for the legions of enemies that Mundine had cultivated over many years.

Anderson Silva v Chael Sonnen
This Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title bout was preceded by close to three whole months of smack talking – most of it coming from the lips of Sonnen, the upstart hoping to topple one of the world's best pound-for-pound mixed martial art fighters.

For four rounds, Sonnen looked the goods. But then Silva landed a triangle choke 110 seconds from the end of the final round. Sonnen tapped out, handing Silva a UFC-record 12th victory in a row, and giving the sport one of its most epic fights.

Charlie Villanueva v Kevin Garnett
After the Boston Celtics beat the Detroit Pistons in a November NBA game, Villanueva, who has alopecia, claimed on Twitter that famous smack-talker Garnett called him a "cancer patient". Garnett helpfully clarified that he would never say anything so distasteful. "My comment to Charlie Villanueva was in fact, 'You are cancerous to your team and our league'," he said.

On Twitter, Villaneuva hit back: "KG talks alot of crap, he's prob never been in a fight, I would love to get in a ring with him, I will expose him."

Floyd Mayweather v Sugar Shane Mosley
Sadly, the Villanueva-Garnett bout never happened, and nor did the fight between Manny 'Pac Man' Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. The bout looked ready to go ahead several times this year, but for a variety of reasons never happened.

But Mayweather hardly sat around idly by waiting for things to fall into place. He took part in what was probably the most hyped fight of the year when he took on and beat Sugar Shane Mosley in May. Mayweather dominated 11 of the 12 rounds to take his phenomenal record to 41-0.

Rui Costa v Carlos Barreda

For all the big hits and long hard slogs served up in the ring and in the Twitterverse in 2010, BigPond Sport's vote for fight of the year had to be this encounter in the traditionally non-contact sport of cycling, when Rui Costa and Carlos Barreda came to blows at the Tour De France.

Their names appear at the top of the article, and these quotes we're to your liking then:

'Green dropped Briggs quicker than a coin off a tall building'

'It was a victory not just for Wood and not just for TV's most credibility-challenged genre, but also for the legions of enemies that Mundine had cultivated over many years'.

'On Twitter, Villaneuva hit back: "KG talks alot of crap, he's prob never been in a fight, I would love to get in a ring with him, I will expose him."

Doncha just love it when they write up shit local fights like the ones here (Mundine Green) when the careers of really bright prospects like Geale, Whithead, Bolling, Lenny Zap, Will Tomlinson, McConville, Caparello etc go unnoticed by these so-called "scribes".

The ****wits obviously didn't watch Soto vs. Antillion, Kats vs. Marquez among numerous others?

Green vs. Briggs - shouldn't even be mentioned as a 'fight'.

Farce is more atune for that. I suppose fight and farce both begin with F as does ****off which their article should of in the first place.
