Galento did request a rematch, but then so did a lot of people.

A rematch would have been viable, but there were other better options on the table and it probably simply never happened.

Tony Galento didn't shy from wrestling octopuses and feared no man.

Of course he was never going to beat Louis, but he did make the Bomber's finishing job easier with poor judgment. He showed up for the streaking Nova much lighter and displayed championship round stamina he may not have been expected by many to possess beforehand, making a case that he might be a newer, smarter and more improved Galento for a return title engagement.

Buddy never displayed the resilience which saw Tony get off the deck for the first time in his career to put Louis in the same place. Buddy was very obviously still out of it when the bell rang to commence round seven. Was that all due to the final punch? I'm convinced there's a good chance his corner retires him before round seven even without it.

If I was Mike Jacobs, I know which contender I would have been banking on being able to draw the larger gate-the guy who proved he could come back after getting hurt and dropped by Louis.
So...you've made the case for Louis/Galento II! (I did praise your eye for promotion right off the bat!)

Except there were other deserving contenders still waiting for their own shot at Louis.

By the time they began ebbing out, Two-Ton was through.

As I said, Galento was ranked highest by the NBA at the end of 1939 :

He was also very popular, a colourful character, so he would've been a draw.

But I think other factors prevented the match.

Thanks. The rating speaks strongly of Galento's viability.

Interesting criterion of the National Boxing Association: consistency.

It would seem very rare indeed for the sanctioning body to rank as number-one contender a fighter only months before brutally knocked out by the champion. I can't imagine this even in the supposed opposition-poor reign of Larry Holmes.

This is solid evidence that Joe Louis defended against a truly poor crop.

I originally thought Galento didn't get a second chance simply because no one was anxious to see him risk his health in doing so.

Now --and even though I still staunchly consider a rematch completely uncalled for-- the original thread question must remain.

you dont give fighters a rematch unless it his highly warranted and demanded by the fans galento had a chance and did absolutely nothing who in their right mind would have paid to watch a rematch i dont think it even entered a promoters mind to set up a rematch

Lou Nova was the #1 contender and Galento beat him.

Regardless of the circumstances of the win, that made Galento the new #1 by default.

Shame in some ways because Nova was becoming quite hyped and Louis Nova might just have been built into a megafight.
