Default Zero Fitness

Morning

After reading a few fighting Manga's, the recent Fight Night Champion release & this forum I have finally taken it on myself to start a change in my life.

I'm 23 years old smoker, underweight & extremely unfit and as such I have become unsatisfied with myself & where I currently stand.

So I started jogging yesterday, doing a hill here on my parents Holiday Resorts (extremely steep, about 600 meters with more than a 15+ meter difference in height from the bottom of the hill till the top (don't know how to describe the incline in English as I am Afrikaans, sorry)), I jogged up & down once and then proceeded to sprint it half way, needless to say that I puked my lunges out & slept for an hour afterwards.

I'm resting my muscles today, but will continue tomorrow.

I'd just like to post a quick thank you to everyone on the forum for all the information on this site.

Forgive me if this is not in the correct section.

Regards

Now that I'm in the correct section, let's begin with the basics for my log:

Name: Coenraad Vlietstra
Age: 23
Height: 6'1
Reach: 72 in
Weight: 75 Kg +- (I don't own a scale)

Fitness level: whats that?
Strength: I punch a keyboard the whole day

So basically as far as I can tell before I decide to do anything else I have to get my stamina up, which would require me to run & run & run. So I basically set out my first month (the month of April) to do as much as that as possible, with my off days I'll be doing some basic weight lifting, push ups etc.

So here is two quick questions for you guys:
  1. Picking up weight? Do I need to, cause as far as I can tell; I'm underweight, I have to be somewhere between 84 to 88kgs. If it would be to my benefit, what exactly would be the best way to do so?
  2. Whats the best way to relieve muscle tension after a workout?

1. Food. Read the sticky nutrition thread in the main training forum. Basically what you want is whole natural foods, in large amounts.
2. Rest. The amount of rest time you need can be shortened with a proper diet. Sleep and eat well and you'll be fine.

I would not take the running route, there's no need to improve cardiovascular endurance first. You'll improve that in a boxing gym (assuming you want to box), getting in shape is what gyms are for. The added benefit is that you can build some muscle at the same time, but again that requires food in large amounts.

Unfortunately there isn't a gym near by & I'm yet to locate one further away, I live in a sleepy little town (population maybe near 1000 at most). We have one small under equipped gym here, its really like a one street town & the closest 'city' is over 80km from here. So I'd rather want to actually get fit, get down the basics as much as I possibly can & when I do find a gym it would be worth my time as even if I find a gym I would basically only be able to attend a day a week if I'm lucky (petrol prices are hectic almost ZAR 10.00 a liter)

In that case you'd be better off doing one of the bodyweight exercise routines from El Puma (a regular poster) than just running.

Perhaps this thread is of some use.
