Chuck Davey was really unimpressive in the footage I've watched of him. Not particuarly strong. Not a great puncher. Technique was flawed. He wouldn't even be a belt holder today in my opinion.

I'm inclined to believe Ike.

Yeah Chuck had alot of favour behind him in his career. Basilio was robbed by him. williams was asked to throw the fight. Apparently chuck davey got beat so bad by kid gavilan that 4 of his loyal fans had a heart attack and died!

I thought Davey beat Basilio.

I'm not saying he was great but he was a good southpaw boxer/mover.

Green Basilio? Wasn't really a great display by either man in that one. Basilio would have smashed him years later in my opinion.

Yeh it was early in Basilio's career and he lacked that all out intensity he could bring into fights later in his career, and that ever-head-moving style he would develop later, but he was still one of the best in the world at this point in time.

It was late in Ike's career, with over 140 bouts behind him, and above his best weight. He'd take seven months off after this loss. Before the year was out, Davey (who was fighting every month when Williams came along), would decision Basilio in a rematch and retire Graziano before 1952 was out.

Four of Ike's six stoppage defeats occurred during the two year period from May 1951 to June 1953, but nobody ever stopped him faster than Davey. Chico Vejar (a reasonably tough guy with three stoppage losses in 116 career bouts) is probably the best opponent Chuck stopped other than Ike, and Davey knocked him out with body shots between the draw and decision against Basilio. I'd like to know Vejar's thoughts on whether or not Davey had the necessary potency to stop a past prime Williams. Could ALL of Chuck's wins have been fixed?

well duo it certaintly looked to me like graziano wasnt trying that hard against chuck when they fought and chico was very tough so you might just be right maybe all of chucks fights were fixed.
