And who are the most interesting amateur heavyweights? The list below is not an objective ranking about who’s the best amateur right now and so on, it’s a highly subjective ranking about potential to be a succesful professional heavyweight. Read it as some kind of amateurdraft if you like, where nr 1 is the one I would choose first (as a promoter) and so on…

(1) Oleksandr Usyk (!)
YOB: 1987
H-W: 6.3-H
Country: Ukraine
Usyk has transformed from a good middleweight to a very good heavyweight. A technical southpawboxer who relies a lot on speed and reflexes. Lost a very close fight to Mekhontsev in the semifinal of WC 2009.

(2) Roberto Cammarelle
YOB: 1980
H-W: 6.3-SH
Country: Italy
He took the goldmedal in Beijing and won the WC in both 2007 and 2009, so his merits speaks for itself. Cammarelle is a fantastic boxer who's fast, hits hard and show up good reflexes. But I heard that he’s quite happy with his amateurlife and not so enthusiastic about turning pro, but with the two golds in the pocket, he surely is a hot name for the proscene and people have changed their mind before… Let’s hope that Cammarelle turns pro, cause I’m rather sure that he will be a succesful and an exciting one.

Country: Russia
A skillful pressure fighter from Russia. who won the European Championships in 2010, where he beat Cammarelle on his way.

YOB: 1990

Country: Kazakhstan
A tall, mobile and rather powerful boxer who went to the final as a heavy in the Youth world championships 2008. He also competed as a super heavy in WC 2009 where he outboxed Russias Sergeev for two rounds but run out of gas and lost a close decision.

YOB: 1990
H-W: 6.4-SH
Country: Cuba
Cuban teenager who’s a fast, powerful boxer with fine skills. Became the Youth World Champ in November and won the Cordova Cardin tournament in June at super heavy. Lost to Ukrainian Kapitonenko in WC 2009.

YOB: 1992
H: 6.1-H
Country: Cuba
A young, fasthanded heavyweight from Cuba who became the junior world champ and the youth olympic champ in 2010. He also won the Cuban Olympiad 2010, beating Savon and Acosta during the way.

YOB: 1992
W: 6.5-SH
Country: Croatia
The Junior World Champ in the superheavyweight division in 2010 looks fasthanded. mobile and rather powerful so absolutely one to follow a little closer in the future.

A big and mobile frenchman who became the superheavy silvermedalist in 2010:s Junior World Championship and the goldmedalist at the youth olympics 2010.

A well schooled Ukrainian with an economic style, who behind a tight guard was some kind of surprise in WC 2009, where he took the silver and beat Zhilei and Savon among others on his way.

Country: China
A huge chinese who’s rather mobile and smooth for someone at his size. Took the silver in Beijing, where he lost to Cammarelle in the final and lost in the semifinal against Kapitonenko in WC 2009.

Country: New Zealand
Seen as the most promising heavyweight/superheavyweight from down under since David Tua. Took a bronze at the Junior WC in 2010, where he beat the Cuban Castro on his way.

Country: Russia
The best junior super heavy in the world for a couple of years. Was expected to take over the Russian mantle after Timurziev but seems to have stagnated a little lately.

A fast and mobile southpaw who competed in WC 2009 where he lost a rather close fight to Bulgarian Pulev. He also took a bronze medal in EC 2010, where he lost on injury to the eventual winner Kuzmin.

Country: Russia
One of the best heavies/supeheavies in Russia who's more of a brawler than a "boxer".

The silvermedalist from jr WC 2006 is a big man with good skills and has been doing the transiton to the senior level better than most of his “classmates” on the list. He competed in the WC 2009 where he lost to Zhang Zhilei.

A Russian southpaw who has done some success at the international level, in the shadow of Timurziev. He beat the american Hunter in December 2008 and also became the Russian champ in 2009 for exemple.

The fast and powerful southpaw who won the silver as a heavy in Athen 2004 and lost in the semifinal against Cammarelle as a super heavy in WC 2009 might be a crowdfavorite as a pro, but a questionable chin might be his downfall at the end.

Country: USA
Although Hunter did not even got to the Olympics 2008 and lost to Cammarelle in the 1st round of WC 2009 I rate him as one of the most interesting names for the proscene. Hunter is an unusually fast heavyweight. He is both fast in hands, feet and mind. In addition, he has good reflexes which makes him very hard to hit. He might lack a little in the power department though.

H-W: 6.4-SH
Country: Russia
Russias man in the super heavyweight at the moment. Sergeev is a fairly traditional standup, european boxer who might be a little to “amateurish” at the end.

H-W: 6.2-H
Country: Russia
Hard hitting Russian who became jr world champ among heavyweights in 2004 and knocked out the American Deontay Wilder in a duel in 2008.

(23) Dino Mansour

Country: Croatia
One of the best “juniors” in the super heavyweight division. He won the U-19 European Championships in 2009 for exemple.

(24) Clemente Russo
YOB: 1982
H-W: 5.11-H
Country: Italy
A short “boxer” who’s “slap and dance”-style is tailormmade for the amateurgame. He won the WC in 2007 and took the silver in Beijing. He could probably make life difficult for any of the much bigger Europeans, but realistically is the cruiserweight his division.

Country: Cuba
Alfonso is a tall boxer with good skills. Might be a little to defensive minded though. He’s also been stopped twice (against Cammarelle and Ouatah) in 2009, which is not a good sign.

The English champ from 2010 who is touted as the next Big thing from UK.

Wow that's an exciting fight. My thoughts on Hrgovic.

I can't believe he's built like he is at 19

Chin - absolutely sold on his chin. Kharitonov is 6'4 250lbs and very heavy handed and Hrgovic took plenty of flush shots without getting hurt and reacted well when getting hit.

Power- I think he has legit power. Kharitonov has a very sturdy and proven chin and Hrgovic seemed to slightly stun him more than once in the 2nd and seriously rocked him more than once in the 4th. Hrgovic can hit but due to his style he isn't always sitting down on his shots.

Style - Like Romanchuk and Bowe his infighting skills for such a big guy are remarkable. He should learn to jab more, control range, and fight on the outside more often imo. He takes alot more punishment then he needs to (although its exciting as hell and fan friendly)

Against other top SHW's.

Zhang - He should have a big edge in handspeed and footspeed and along with superior infighting and similar size he has the tools to beat Zhang imo.

Kapitonenko - I'd be shocked if he didn't comptletely outclass Roman

Kuzim - is even bigger and probably hits harder than Kharitonov but he doesn't put his punches together as good, has slower hands and isn't as good as cutting off the ring. Unless he stands toe to toe and slugs the whole time i think he could beat Kuzmin.

Zuyev - being a southpaw may bother Hrgovic and he has good footwork, handspeed, infighting and combination punching although Hrgovic is better at the last 3 imo and along with his size should be able to win. Zuyev and Cammarelle will present him with the most problems i think. (haven't seen Dychko)

Cammarelle - depends on how much he has left but if he's close to top form would obviously be his hardest opponent. Could produce a Cammarelle vs Romanchuk epic type fight.

Gotta say i haven't been caring about the SHW's at the upcoming Worlds and Olympics but with Hrgovic and Dychko i'm excited now.

I agree with what you said about Hrgovic. Great prospect. Needs a little work on the jab to score points, transitioning to defense when needed, and long term stamina, but like you said, power, skills, size, durability, and heart is there. He has a year to improve for 2012.

Yes Mike Hunter jr is the son of the late Mike " the bounty " Hunter. His dad was a fringe contender / spoiler type who was at his best in the 1990's.

Mike Hunter jr is fast handed and skilled, but he's small for the division, does not hit hard. Bigger fighters that put pressure on him cause him trouble, and Hunter does not like to stand and trade.. With a favorable draw, Hunter jr can win a bronze in the 2012 Olympics. He is the best the USA has for now at super heavyweight.

I thought Mekhontsev is now fighting at 81 kg, switching with Beterbiev who jumped to 91 kg at the most recent Russian championships. That move did not work well for Beterviec. I think he got stopped in that tournament.

I also read something a year or so back about Russo turning pro with a Don King contract.

(17) Viktar Zuyev YOB: 1983 H-W: 6.1-SH Country: Belarus The fast and powerful southpaw who won the silver as a heavy in Athen 2004 and lost in the semifinal against Cammarelle as a super heavy in WC 2009 might be a crowdfavorite as a pro, but a questionable chin might be his downfall at the end. (22) Evgeny Romanov YOB: 1985 H-W: 6.2-H Country: Russia Hard hitting Russian who became jr world champ among heavyweights in 2004 and knocked out the American Deontay Wilder in a duel in 2008. (23) Dino Mansour YOB: 1990 H-W: SH Country: Croatia One of the best “juniors” in the super heavyweight division. He won the U-19 European Championships in 2009 for exemple. He could probably make life difficult for any of the much bigger Europeans, but realistically is the cruiserweight his division. He’s also been stopped twice (against Cammarelle and Ouatah) in 2009, which is not a good sign. (26) Anthony Joshua (!) YOB: 1989 H-W: 6.5-SH Country: UK The English champ from 2010 who is touted as the next Big thing from UK. (27) Magomed Omarov YOB: 1989 H-W: SH Country: Russia A young fighter who's ranked top5 in Russia and got a win over Sergey Kuzmin in 2011 for exemple (2 Vasilij Levit YOB: 1988 H-W: 6.1-H Country: Kazakstan A fast powerhitter with a good amateur CV. Competed in WC where he lost a close fight to home fighter Russo. (29) Magomedrasul Medzhidov YOB: 1986 H-W: 6.2-SH Country: Azerbadjan A big surprise in the World Series of Boxing where he got wins over a couple of world ranked amateurs. (30) Lenroy Thompson YOB: 1988 H-W: 6.2-SH Country: USA He became the US future star champ in 2008 and won the Golden Gloves in 2009 with a style that is based on constant movement. >>> Dycho and Hrgovic sound like some impresve new comers to the Super Heavyweight divison. Both guys are very young. If Camarelle is off or in decline, one of these two might win gold in London. Kuzmin if he can lose 10 pounds and work on his skills, and stamina is also a threat.

My thoughts on Hrgovic. I can't believe he's built like he is at 19 Chin - absolutely sold on his chin. Kharitonov is 6'4 250lbs and very heavy handed and Hrgovic took plenty of flush shots without getting hurt and reacted well when getting hit. Power- I think he has legit power. Kharitonov has a very sturdy and proven chin and Hrgovic seemed to slightly stun him more than once in the 2nd and seriously rocked him more than once in the 4th. Hrgovic can hit but due to his style he isn't always sitting down on his shots. Style - Like Romanchuk and Bowe his infighting skills for such a big guy are remarkable. He should learn to jab more, control range, and fight on the outside more often imo. He takes alot more punishment then he needs to (although its exciting as hell and fan friendly) Against other top SHW's. Zhang - He should have a big edge in handspeed and footspeed and along with superior infighting and similar size he has the tools to beat Zhang imo. Kapitonenko - I'd be shocked if he didn't comptletely outclass Roman Kuzim - is even bigger and probably hits harder than Kharitonov but he doesn't put his punches together as good, has slower hands and isn't as good as cutting off the ring. Unless he stands toe to toe and slugs the whole time i think he could beat Kuzmin. Zuyev - being a southpaw may bother Hrgovic and he has good footwork, handspeed, infighting and combination punching although Hrgovic is better at the last 3 imo and along with his size should be able to win. Zuyev and Cammarelle will present him with the most problems i think. (haven't seen Dychko) Cammarelle - depends on how much he has left but if he's close to top form would obviously be his hardest opponent. Could produce a Cammarelle vs Romanchuk epic type fight. Gotta say i haven't been caring about the SHW's at the upcoming Worlds and Olympics but with Hrgovic and Dychko i'm excited now.

I agree with what you said about Hrgovic. Great prospect. Needs a little work on the jab to score points, transitioning to defense when needed, and long term stamina, but like you said, power, skills, size, durability, and heart is there. He has a year to improve for 2012.

I thought Mekhontsev is now fighting at 81 kg, switching with Beterbiev who jumped to 91 kg at the most recent Russian championships. That move did not work well for Beterviec. I think he got stopped in that tournament. I also read something a year or so back about Russo turning pro with a Don King contract. Sorry: I am too lazy to search for the details.
